MADISON — University of Wisconsin System President Katharine Lyall has named a 17-member search and screen committee to assist with the search for a new chancellor at UW-Whitewater.

Chancellor H. Gaylon Greenhill announced in October his plans to retire from the university on June 30, 1999. He has served as the 12th chancellor of the 10,400-student campus since 1991. His retirement caps a 37-year career of service to UW-Whitewater, as faculty member, dean, vice chancellor and chancellor.

“Gaylon Greenhill has led UW-Whitewater through a remarkable period,” said President Lyall. “New academic programs have been added and the campus has been modernized and transformed through major building projects. Most recently, the successful completion of a $12 million capital campaign positions UW-Whitewater to continue into the 21st century with distinction.”

The search and screen committee is charged with publicizing the position and generating nominations and applications. It will also screen the applications, identifying no fewer than five persons qualified to fill the position. Candidates from the committee’s list will then be given further consideration by President Lyall and the Special Regents Committee.

The final appointment is made by the full Board of Regents. It is hoped that Greenhill’s successor will take office prior to the start of the 1998-99 academic year.

Regent Ruth Marcene James, Fennimore, is chair of the Special Regents Committee for the UW-Whitewater chancellor search. Other members include Regents Virginia MacNeil, Bayside; Patrick Boyle, Madison; and Guy Gottschalk, Wisconsin Rapids. President Lyall and Regent James will meet with the search and screen committee on December 16 in Whitewater to review procedures, discuss a timeline and respond to questions from the group.
