MADISON — University of Wisconsin Board of Regents today approved the appointment of John Wanat as vice-chancellor of academic affairs and provost of UW-Milwaukee, effective July 1.

After a national search, UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher selected Wanat to succeed Kenneth Watters, who will retire this summer after 30 years at UWM. Wanat’s salary will be $170,900.

Wanat currently serves as vice provost and executive associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

A 22-year veteran of UIC, the tenured professor of political science has been part of an administrative team that has increased external funding, improved student performance and stressed undergraduate education, and increased the diversity of the student population.

Wanat earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1972. His primary area of scholarly specialization is budgeting and bureaucratic politics as they relate to public administration. He also studies American government, public policy and methodology.
