MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents is inviting public comment on recommended changes to university rules regarding student conduct and conduct on university property.
The public hearing will be at UW-Milwaukee on Thursday, March 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 280 of the Zelazo Center, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd. Parking will be available at the UW-Milwaukee Union, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.
A committee of university representatives and students began the process of reviewing two chapters of the Wisconsin Administrative Code in February 2007. The committee was charged with identifying improvements to Chapter UWS 17, which addresses conduct of UW System students, and Chapter UWS 18, which regulates conduct on university lands by students and non-students alike. The last major revision of both chapters occurred in 1996.
As part of the review process, the committee twice sought public input via a website, held two public listening sessions, and conducted extensive research before submitting recommendations to the Board of Regents in October 2008.
A special university website – http://www.wisconsin.edu/admincode/ – shows the draft administrative rules, including changes the Board of Regents made at its October 2008 meeting. The website also provides instructions for parties who wish to provide written comments for the Board’s consideration. Comments will be accepted through March 13.
The Board will include responses to public comments in its submission of the rules to the Legislature for review. The final rules take effect only after the entire state rulemaking process is complete. The goal is to have revised rules in effect at all UW institutions by Fall 2009.
