MADISON, Wis. – Across the nation, institutions of higher education are experiencing significant change. Colleges and universities are embracing new board governance roles, managing state funding shortfalls, and working to maintain positive relationships with policymakers.
These topics will be the focus of a special conference hosted by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on Thursday, Sept. 5, featuring presentations and discussions among state legislators, regents, UW chancellors and other higher-education leaders.
“Our objective is to have a frank, collegial discussion about the partnership between the State of Wisconsin and its public university system. That collaborative relationship has served Wisconsin citizens well for more than a century, and this is an opportunity to strengthen our vital partnership through two-way communication,” said Regent President Michael J. Falbo.
Charles B. Reed, former head of the California State University System, will be the keynote speaker. Rep. Jill Billings, Sen. Sheila Harsdorf, and Rep. Robin Vos are scheduled to participate in a panel discussion about board governance. Sen. Alberta Darling and Rep. Pat Strachota will join a panel discussion about higher-education funding challenges.
All state legislators, along with other state officials, have been invited to attend the conference.
“As a governing board, we must be attentive to the shifting landscape and better understand the challenges faced by public higher education. But we cannot and should not confront those challenges alone. We look forward to hearing concerns of lawmakers and working with them to ensure the vitality of Wisconsin’s system of campuses that are so important to Wisconsin families and to our economy,” said Regent Vice President Regina Millner.
