“I want to extend my congratulations to two new appointments to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents – Christopher Semenas and Thomas Loftus – announced recently by Governor Doyle.

“UW System has worked with Chris Semenas in his role as a former president of the UW-Parkside Student Government Association, and his experience with student governance has undoubtedly prepared him to be a fair and astute representative of UW students across the state. I’m pleased to have the opportunity to work with Chris in this new capacity, as he already has his first Regent meeting under his belt.

“I am also extremely grateful to Beth Richlen, who has served as a thoughtful and diligent representative of students in her two years of service as a Regent. I wish her all the best with her continued UW law studies and future plans.

“I look forward to the opportunity to work with former ambassador to Norway, Thomas Loftus, whose commitment to higher education was exemplified during his many years of service as a member of the Wisconsin Legislature.  A UW-Madison alumnus, former Assembly speaker Loftus worked to establish a Select Committee on the Future of the UW System as a state representative, underscoring his appreciation for the vital role public higher education plays in Wisconsin.  With his extensive understanding of the dynamic between UW System and the state government, Tom’s insights will be invaluable.

“I also want to extend heartfelt thanks to Toby Marcovich, whose eight years as a member of the board and tenure as president were exceptional.  Toby inspired us when we were challenged, lifted us when we were down, and tickled us when we needed a laugh. He will be missed.”
