MADISON — Katharine Lyall, president of the University of Wisconsin System, issued the following statement today concerning the appointment of former UW-Madison Chancellor David Ward as president of the American Council on Education:

“On behalf of all of David Ward’s many friends and colleagues in the University of Wisconsin System, I want to congratulate him on his new position as president of the American Council on Education. ACE is a strong and effective advocate for the nation’s colleges and universities, and David will do an outstanding job on our behalf in Washington.

“David’s long record of achievement at UW-Madison — as professor, provost and chancellor — is great preparation for his new assignment. He is passionate about enhancing undergraduate education, but he is also recognized nationally as a leader on such issues as federal funding for university research, student financial aid, the next-generation Internet, private giving, technology transfer, and the future of land-grant institutions. His international experience — being from the United Kingdom, having taught in Canada, and having promoted this area so well at UW-Madison — is another plus, as is his unquestioned commitment to greater diversity in higher education.

“David’s experience within a system of public universities — in a state that also has strong technical colleges and independent colleges — makes him a great choice as president of ACE. I look forward to working with him again in this new, national role.”
