MADISON – University of Wisconsin System President Katharine C. Lyall today announced the names of four finalists for the position of chancellor of UW-La Crosse.

The names have been forwarded to the Board of Regents’ Special Committee for the UW-La Crosse Chancellor Search, chaired by Regent Jonathan Barry, which will interview the finalists in Madison on Monday, March 5.

Other committee members are Regents Joseph Alexander, Roger Axtell and Lolita Schneiders. The full Board of Regents will take final action once it receives a recommendation from the special committee, probably at the March 9 regular meeting of the Board.

The finalists, their titles and current institutions are as follows:

  • J. William Berry
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
    University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
  • Richard Davenport
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs
Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, Michigan)
  • Douglas Hastad
    Interim Chancellor
    University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
  • Beverly J. Schmoll
    Dean, Graduate Programs and Research
    University of Michigan-Flint

A 19-member UW-La Crosse campus/community search and screen committee, chaired by James Gallagher, professor of archaeology, submitted its recommendations to President Lyall on February 12.

The person chosen by the Regents will succeed Judith Kuipers, who resigned last year to become president of the Fielding Institute.
