On behalf of the Board of Regents, I am pleased to announce this year’s Academic Staff Regents Awards for Excellence.
By presenting this award each year, we demonstrate the Board’s strong appreciation for the UW System’s non-instructional academic staff.
The strength of the System and its institutions can be attributed, in part, to the excellence of our academic staff. This award acknowledges the vital contributions they all make, as well as their institutional loyalty, professionalism, and devotion to serving students and the public.
Regents Gottschalk, Olivieri and McPike assisted me in the selection process this year. We received 15 impressive nominations. The contributions of each of the nominees are significant, and they demonstrate the wide range of invaluable services being provided by non-instructional academic staff throughout the UW System. The nominees included an associate registrar, two librarians, and a director of student support services, to name a few.
We were only permitted to select two individuals for awards.
Our final decision was based on several performance criteria. Chiefly, the committee looked for extraordinary contributions to the nominee’s unit, and an overall level of service that truly enhanced the mission of the university.
The two recipients each receive $5,000, which will be used to support their own professional development or to enhance the program or function of their department.
It is my great pleasure to introduce the first recipient of the 2005 Academic Staff Regents Awards for Excellence.
Carole Swan Halberg is the Special Assistant to the Chancellor at UW-Eau Claire, as well as the President of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Carole has been instrumental in a very successful fundraising campaign, which has raised more than $1 million for scholarships and grants, with $145,000 earmarked to meet Plan 2008 recruitment goals. The goal was met two years ahead of schedule. Additionally, she spearheaded the “Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence” campaign, having set a goal of $35 million and exceeded it by $8 million.
Carole was part of a team that won 2004 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District V Gold Awards. One was for the Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign and another for the campus “e-view,” an online alumni newsletter. The team also won a Bronze Award for the “University Bulletin,” which keeps faculty and staff up-to-date on campus news events.
Larry Weber, the past Chairman of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Board of Directors says, “Carole Halberg has spent her career leading and mentoring others and helping make a UW-Eau Claire education a reality for countless students. In so doing, she has earned my respect as well as the respect of colleagues throughout the community and the state.”
