UW-Superior expands academic offerings with new programs

The University of Wisconsin-Superior continues to expand its academic portfolio, introducing new programs and delivery options designed to meet evolving workforce demands and provide greater flexibility for students.

From emerging fields like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence to expanded online degrees and new majors, UW-Superior is building degree pathways that connect students with today’s in-demand careers.

AI Essentials Certificate Provides Skills for Today’s Workplace

The AI Essentials: Strategies for Efficiency & Productivity certificate is a 10-session Zoom series designed to make artificial intelligence accessible and practical. Participants explore how AI is shaping everyday tools, examine ethical and strategic uses, and learn how to apply it to streamline work — no coding required.

The program is geared toward business owners, professionals and curious learners seeking to build confidence and practical skills for the future workplace. This certificate may be taken for three credits or on a non-credit basis.

Cybersecurity Concentration Helps Meet Growing Demand

UW-Superior has launched a cybersecurity concentration within its computer science major to meet increasing demand in one of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields.

The program combines foundational computer science with specialized training in network security, risk assessment and threat analysis and digital forensics. It is available both on campus and fully online, with all courses offered in both formats.

Students gain hands-on experience through attack-and-defense simulations, cybersecurity labs and applied coursework aligned with industry standards set by the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. Graduates are prepared for careers in both private industry and government sectors.

Graphic Design Program Launching 2027

UW-Superior will introduce a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design beginning in January 2027. The program builds on UW-Superior’s strengths in digital art and design and will be offered on campus. The program will leverage community and industry partnerships for internships and project-based experience.

Graduates will be prepared for careers in graphic design and related fields such as social media marketing, user experience and user interface design and content creation.

Early Childhood Special Education (Birth–Grade 3) Now Fully Online

The early childhood special education (birth–grade 3) program is offered fully online to meet student needs.

This licensure program prepares students to teach young children through play-based, hands-on and inclusive learning approaches. Coursework emphasizes brain-based development, differentiated instruction and student-centered teaching.

Students gain early field experience and work across all early childhood age groups.

The program is available to first-time bachelor’s degree students as well as those who already hold a bachelor’s degree and are seeking licensure.

Exercise Science Becomes a Major

UW-Superior’s exercise science program has been elevated from a concentration to a full major.

The program helps students understand how movement, health and performance are connected. Through hands-on learning and real-world experiences, students develop skills in research, leadership and assessment.

Graduates are prepared for careers in health and fitness fields or for graduate study in areas such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training and physician assistant studies.

Finance Degree Now Available Online

UW-Superior’s Bachelor of Science in business administration–finance will be offered fully online beginning in fall 2026, alongside its on-campus option.

Designed for working professionals and non-traditional students, the program features accelerated eight-week courses delivered asynchronously, allowing students to balance coursework with work and family responsibilities.

On-campus students continue to benefit from small classes, faculty interaction and hands-on learning, while retaining the option to take courses online.

“This new option is ideal for place-bound learners who want to pursue careers in the growing field of finance,” said Daniel Rust, director of the School of Business and Economics.

Maser of Social Work Goes Online

UW-Superior will launch an online Master of Social Work program in fall 2027, designed for students seeking a high-quality, career-focused social work graduate degree emphasizing personal, professional and systemic well-being.

The program blends online coursework with virtual sessions and in-person weekend workshops to support skill development while accommodating working adults.

Students with accredited undergraduate social work degrees may complete the program in one year through the Advanced Standing pathway, while others can complete the Foundation program in two years.

Coursework emphasizes rural mental health, resilience-focused interventions, clinical practice and mindfulness-based approaches — areas of growing demand in the field.

New Sport and Recreation Management Degree

UW-Superior has added a Bachelor of Science in sport and recreation management.

Housed in the Department of Health and Human Performance, the program prepares students for careers in sport, fitness, recreation and event management. It is available both on campus and online.

Students gain applied experience through coursework, field placements and partnerships with regional organizations.

“The program has a strong foundation in leadership, business and community engagement,” said Kim LeBard-Rankila, department chair. “Students gain real-world experience through applied coursework and fieldwork.”

UW-Superior will continue to offer a sport management minor.
