A University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh economist has helped scientifically gauge the economic firepower of EAA AirVenture’s annual aeronautical blockbuster, while giving students a co-pilot role in the study.
A new economic impact analysis done by Professor David Fuller with key survey assistance from his students, shows a total economic impact of $257 million for the Fox Valley regional economy in 2024, when 650,000 aviation enthusiasts descended on Oshkosh. That compares with an economic impact of $170 million in 2017, the last assessment Fuller and UWO made.
Release of the study report comes on the eve of the 2025 AirVenture that runs July 21-27 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
A large audience enjoys a night airshow at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh in 2019.
Fuller said he was asked by the Experimental Aircraft Association to provide an updated analysis of the event’s impact on the local economy. Fuller surveyed patrons and vendors/exhibitors to determine how much they spent in the area economy.
The results were used in an economic impact analysis to determine the total impact on the local economy.
“This study showcases the significant economic footprint of EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh and the greater Fox Valley region,” Fuller said. “The event brings in a total of $257 million and 2,100 jobs to the Fox Valley region economy—$117 million and 815 jobs to Oshkosh alone.”
The event attracts visitors from around the world who purchase lodging, food and drinks, gas and retail items including clothing and supplies.
The study showcases AirVenture’s immense value to the local economy and the City of Oshkosh.
“I’m proud that UW–Oshkosh played a central role in producing the analysis,” Fuller said. “Faculty-led research and student involvement in survey work reflects the university’s commitment to community engagement and real-world impact. Important studies like this aren’t possible without the intellectual capital of UW–Oshkosh and our strong community links.”
