The legislature made changes to tenure in the 2015-17 State Budget. It removed existing statutory language on tenure and added new language outlining procedures for the layoff of faculty. In response to these changes the Board of Regents immediately imported the former statutory language on tenure as Board policy. In addition, when the legislative changes were being discussed, then-Regent President Falbo and UW System President Ray Cross appointed the Tenure Policy Task Force to review tenure policy and to make recommendations to the Board. The Board adopted new and revised tenure policies, based on the task force’s recommendations, in March 2016.
Tenure Policies
The Board of Regents approved the following Regent Policy Documents on tenure on March 10, 2016:
- Regent Policy Document 20-9, “Periodic Post-Tenure Review in Support of Tenured Faculty Development
- Regent Policy Document 20-23, “Faculty Tenure”
- Regent Policy Document 20-24, “Procedures Relating to Financial Emergency or Program Discontinuance Requiring Faculty Layoff and Termination”
