1.     Interim Policy Purpose

The purpose of this interim policy is to amend SYS 171, Recruitment/Retention of Students to comply with the recent Supreme Court decisions in Students for Fair Admissions v. the University of North Carolina and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard University.

Following these decisions, this interim waiver removes the mention of minority status for consideration from this System Administrative Policy.

This interim policy action applies to all UW System universities.

4.     Scope

This interim policy action primarily  impacts all UW System universities. The amendment is effective beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year.

6.     Interim Policy Statement

This interim policy temporarily suspends the ability of UW System universities to consider if a student is a member of a minority group for targeted recruitment/retention issues until a full revision of the policy can be completed in the fall of 2023.

Beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year, the second paragraph of section 1 of SYS 171 reads:

“Targeted groups may include disadvantaged students, students underrepresented by gender in a particular discipline or exceptionally talented students an institution is attempting to recruit to remain competitive in the higher education environment.”

Section 3.B.a reads:

“Recruitment and retention programs, such as orientation programs, to meet special needs of disadvantaged students, or to “exert leadership in modifying stereotypes” by striving to attract students of the underrepresented gender into a particular discipline.”
