Chapter 36 - Wisconsin Statutes
Chapter 36 sets forth the mission and purpose of the University of Wisconsin System. This statute also describes:
- the responsibilities and powers of the Board of Regents in governing the System,
- faculty and student roles in shared governance,
- faculty appointment and tenure rights,
- academic staff appointments, and
- other aspects involved in the administration of the University of Wisconsin System.
The Wisconsin Statutes are held and maintained within the Wisconsin Legislature website. The UW Office of General Counsel represents the Board of Regents and should be consulted regarding legal questions or concerns related to interpretation of Chapter 36.

Wisconsin Administrative Code (Rules Adopted by the Board of Regents)
These rules were adopted pursuant to the rule-making authority vested in the Board by Chapter 36 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The rules include, but are not limited to, subjects such as
- an ethics code for University employees,
- the use of University facilities, and
- procedures for dismissing various categories of employees.

Bylaws of the Regents
Bylaws of the Regents
The Regent Bylaws were created pursuant to the authority vested in the Board of Regents by Chapter 36 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The Bylaws of the Regents govern the activities of the Board of Regents itself. The bylaws address four primary topics relevant to the governance of the Board of Regents:
- Board Meetings and Business,
- Board Officers and their Duties,
- Board Committees, and
- the University of Wisconsin System Administration.
