The Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice and representation to the Board of Regents of the UW System, UW System Administration, UW System institutions, and UW System administrators and staff, and serves as liaison to state government offices and agencies, including the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
The UW System attorneys have expertise and practice in a number of general legal subject areas, such as discrimination law and employment law. Because higher education law is complex, Office of General Counsel attorneys also specialize in certain areas.

Accessing Legal Services
Our attorneys represent the Board of Regents of the UW System as an institutional entity. We are available to provide counsel to any UW System employee who represents the University’s interests and has questions arising in the course and scope of their employment.
The Office of General Counsel does not represent or provide legal advice to students, employees, or the general public on personal matters, including challenges to institutional decisions. If you are seeking advice for a personal matter, you may contact the State Bar of Wisconsin at (800) 362-9082 for a lawyer referral.
