1. Purpose

 The purpose of this practice directive is to reference the Faculty Sabbatical Program administered under the auspices of the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.

2. Background

Wis. Stat. § 36.11(17) authorizes the Board of Regents to grant faculty sabbaticals.  UW System Administrative Policy 160: The Faculty Sabbatical Program (formerly ACPS 3.3) outlines the guidelines for governing the University of Wisconsin System faculty sabbatical program.

3. Definitions

Definitions specific to this policy:

“Sabbatical” means the professional leave program authorized by Wis. Stat. § 36.11(17).

4. Practice Directive

As stated in UW System Administrative Policy 160: The Faculty Sabbatical Program, “The purpose of the faculty sabbatical program is to enable recipients to be engaged in intensive study in order to become more effective teachers and scholars and to enhance their services to the University.”  For the complete sabbatical guidelines, please see UW System Administrative Policy 160, additional guidelines for a given biennium, and the sabbatical agreement form.
