1.     Purpose of Guidelines

The purpose of the guidelines is to provide information regarding extra-institutional examinations such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations and College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations.

2.     Publishing Office(s)

The UW System Office of Academic Programs & Faculty Advancement is the publishing office. This guideline will affect the UW System Office of Academic and Student Affairs, all UW System universities, and UW System university transfer students.

3.     Affected Stakeholders on Campus

This guidance will influence the work of Admissions Offices. Each university in the UW System has Admissions offices. This guideline will be distributed to Provosts, Senior Student Affairs Officers and Admissions Officers, Registrars, and Transfer Coordinators.

4.     Primary Responsibility

The UW System Office of Academic Programs and Faculty Advancement will monitor any need to update the guideline as well as do the three-year guideline review.

Institutions’ Admissions offices are expected to implement and maintain compliance with the policies referenced by these guidelines.

5.     Guidelines

  1. Awarding of University Credit for Examinations
    1. AP Examinations
      1. RPD 7-1, Transfer and Award of Credit for Extra-Institutional Learning, and SYS 135, UW System Undergraduate Policy, require that UW System institutions award university credit for scores of 3, 4 or 5 on AP examinations.
    2. IB Examinations
      1. RPD 7-1, Transfer and Award of Credit for Extra-Institutional Learning, and SYS 135, UW System Undergraduate Policy, currently require that institutions award a minimum of three (3) university credits for scores of 4, 5, 6 or 7 on all Higher Level (HL) IB examinations. The policy also requires the awarding of three (3) additional credits for students who complete the full IB diploma program with a minimum score of 28 or above.
