Pathways to Admission Frequently Asked Questions
Direct Admit Wisconsin
Direct Admit Wisconsin is an initiative by the Universities of Wisconsin to proactively offer admission to qualifying high school students in between their junior and senior years of high school. Direct admission removes the traditional application process and instead uses academic data provided by the high school to admit students to universities in between their junior and senior years of high school.
Each academic year, UW universities and school districts will be given the opportunity to continue participation or join if they have not participated in previous years. Currently, all Universities of Wisconsin except UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, and UW-Madison are participating in Direct Admit Wisconsin.
Direct Admit Wisconsin is a Universities of Wisconsin initiative. Currently, it does not include the Wisconsin Technical Colleges or Wisconsin private colleges and universities.
Test scores are not a factor in direct admission. However, a student may need to submit test scores to their selected UW university for scholarships or course placement.
Participating UW universities have the capacity to serve students admitted through Direct Admit Wisconsin and students who apply through the traditional application process. Direct Admit Wisconsin will not reduce the chance of admission for a student who applies. Direct admission and the traditional application are separate processes, and one does not impact the other.
The Direct Admit Wisconsin admission offer is to the UW university, not a specific program or major. Some UW universities or majors have a secondary admission process in which students need to apply to be admitted into a specific academic program. Students are encouraged to contact the UW university or academic program they are interested in directly to determine if there are additional requirements to be admitted into a program/major.
First, you must be enrolled in a participating school district and opt to participate in the program. Then, you must be on track to graduate and complete the credits required for admission – 4 units of English, 3 units of approved math, 3 units of social science, 3 units of natural science, and 4 units of electives. – If you meet those requirements, your unweighted cumulative GPA at the end of your junior year will be reviewed and will determine which UW universities will offer you admission through Direct Admit Wisconsin.
No, Direct Admit Wisconsin is not a mandatory program. Depending on the high school, the student will have the option to either opt in to the program or opt out of participation.
Students need to attend a participating high school and agree to participate. Participation is facilitated by the high school. Students need to meet the direct admission criteria to receive admission offers through Direct Admit Wisconsin.
NOTE: The deadline for the Class of 2027 to sign up to participate in Direct Admit Wisconsin is May 1, 2026.

Some universities also accept the Common App. Students can wait to receive admission decisions from other schools before accepting a direct admit or traditional admission offer.
Students need to complete the Direct Admit form in the Universities of Wisconsin Admission Pathway Portal to claim their direct admission offers. Yes! There will be opportunities for Wisconsin high school students who are not in the top 5-10% of their class to still apply and be admitted to a UW university through either the traditional admission process or through Direct Admit Wisconsin for participating high schools. In fact, most Wisconsin high school graduates meet admissions requirements at most of our universities.
Students who are homeschooled but do not have an ACT score in the 90-98th percentile nationally can still apply to be considered for admission to UW-Madison and/or another UW university. While test scores are not required for a holistic application review, students who are homeschooled will need to provide additional materials for consideration. New legislation requires Wisconsin school boards, charter school operators, and governing bodies of private schools and tribal schools that operate high schools to prepare a class ranking of students on the sole basis of their grade point average at the end of 11th grade, if there are at least 15 students in the class.
The class ranking must identify students who rank in the top 5% or top 10% of their high school class. Your school must also notify you if you are in the top 5% or 10% of your class and include it on your official transcript.
Universities of Wisconsin may revoke an offer of admission if a student admitted under The Wisconsin Guarantee fails to receive a high school diploma; engages in academic misconduct; experiences significantly declining grades after the application is submitted; or if they misrepresent their class rank, or status as a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Yes, absolutely!
- Pursuing the most rigorous courses available to you throughout the entirety of your high school experience is the best way to prepare for a successful college experience. Students who pursue rigorous courses ordinarily find that the transition from high school coursework to college coursework is much easier, and often, they earn higher grades than their peers who did not pursue a rigorous college preparatory path.
- Further, The Wisconsin Guarantee only guarantees admission to a UW university, not to a specific major or program. Admission to some programs and majors is determined by a holistic review of your high school record, and the more you demonstrate your academic ability through advanced coursework, the more likely you will be admitted to competitive programs and majors.
- Additionally, enrolling in early college credit programs or college courses and completing Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests can provide the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. The more college credit you earn in high school, the more flexibility you have in shaping your college experience. Earning college credit while in high school may allow you to graduate early and save money.
No. The Wisconsin Guarantee does not guarantee an applicant admission to any specific major, college, or school. Consideration for admission to direct-entry programs (e.g., Business, Engineering, Dance, Music) will remain part of the holistic review.
