The courses you have taken are viewed to determine if credit can be awarded, what courses they are equivalent to, and how the credit applies toward degree requirements. Some universities include transfer grades in calculating an overall grade point average (GPA), while others use transfer grades primarily in making admission decisions. Transfer grade policies may differ depending on your academic program or your school/college at a UW university. Review transfer admission details and connect with a transfer admission counselor/transfer advisor at each UW you are considering to learn more.

An official transfer credit evaluation is provided once you have been admitted to a UW university after all official transcripts have been received. When you receive your transfer credit evaluation during your admission process depends on the UW university and the time of year. You should receive the credit evaluation before orientation or registration. Keep in touch with the transfer contact at your UW and be sure to ask questions.

NOTE: Some UW universities will provide an official transfer credit evaluation prior to application and/or making an admission decision. Ask the Admissions Office if they will do so.

Ordinarily, yes. Most credit you earn will transfer into a UW university. However, how it will transfer and be applied to your degree requirements will vary based on several factors.

How your courses will transfer and apply depends on the academic program that you are pursuing at a Wisconsin Technical College (an applied/occupational/technical program or a liberal studies transfer program), the grades you earn, and the academic program you hope to pursue at a UW.

Apply or register as a “special or non-degree” student, also called a guest or transient student. Each UW university has its own procedures for enrolling in courses without entering a degree program. Consult the UW university for specific information about admission, deadlines, and the appropriate admission form(s) to complete.

Your home campus may require you to get approval prior to enrolling in a course at a different institution. Check with your advisor or the Registrar’s Office at your home institution to verify.

Ordinarily, the Registrar’s Office at an institution has information about how to obtain and send official transcripts.

Only some UW universities charge an application fee for transfer students. Ten UW universities do not charge an undergraduate application fee. Only UW-Eau Claire ($25), UW-La Crosse ($25), and UW-Madison ($80) charge application fees. If you are a domestic student experiencing financial hardship, you may indicate that on the application to request a fee waiver.

NOTE: Students transferring between UW universities within 12 months do not have to pay an application fee.

Each UW university has different application procedures and admission requirements for specific academic programs. Make sure you review those requirements and procedures for the UWs you are considering. When you apply for admission using the Universities of Wisconsin Admission Application, indicate your preferred academic program.

Every UW university requires students to complete Core General Education Requirements as part of their overall degree requirements. These courses provide students with foundational skills and knowledge in academic disciplines like math, science, composition, social sciences, communication, and humanities.

While all UW universities have similar Core General Education Requirements, they are unique. You should familiarize yourself with those courses along with other degree requirements.
