Undergraduate Admission Resources

First-Year Student Admission Requirements

All UW universities have the same minimum requirements for first-year student admission. We encourage students to pursue the most rigorous path available to you—doing so prepares you for admission, success in college, and financial aid opportunities.

College Prep Program

A “college prep” (college preparatory) program in high school consists of four core subject areas: English, math, social studies/history, and natural science. All UWs require you to complete at least 13 credits in the core subjects, plus four credits in subjects you choose (such as world languages, art, music, computer science).

English: 4 Credits
Examples include: the study of the English language and literature. Courses include Freshman English, composition, literature, rhetoric, and others. Most regular and advanced courses are accepted.

Math: 3 Credits
Examples include: the study of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and other mathematics courses with algebra or geometry prerequisites. Each UW may have specific college-ready math courses they want to see.

Natural Science: 3 Credits
Examples include: the study of the theory and practice of natural sciences, including ecology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, geology, and others. Courses often include a lab.

Social Science: 3 Credits
Examples include: the study of culture, history, political science, economics, sociology, and psychology, including world studies, United States history, economics, civics, and others.

Electives: 4 Credits
Examples include: classes in your personal interests, including world languages, fine arts, computer science, and other areas. Technical and career courses may also be accepted for a portion of your elective credits.

Holistic Admission

Beyond our minimum admission requirements, we are focused on academic performance (such as course type and GPA) and preparation for the college experience. Outside of academics, we look for qualities such as leadership, contributions to your community, work experience, and achievement in the arts, athletics, and other areas. We also want to understand your personal background and experiences, as well as your potential to make a positive contribution to the UW community.
