Hi, my name is Vivek Singhal and I am an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at UW Stout with about 2 years of teaching experience. Prior to teaching, I worked in the industry for about 8 years. I have lived in 10 different states all across the US. In addition to working with students, the best part about my job are the opportunities for continuous learning and improvement. I love creating courses with direct involvement from the industry. I just finished offering a course in Medical Product Design with collaboration from the Med Device industry in the Twin Cities. Currently I am creating a hands-on course in the area of Laser Material Processing and improving my own knowledge on the subject. I love spending my free time with my wife and 2.5 year old son. I also love playing beach volleyball, ping pong, and badminton. I very excited to be a part of this venue and am looking forward to all the creativity and socialization that comes about in the next few days.
TEACHING AND LEARNING PHILOSOPHY
Here are a few things that I try to focus on in my teaching:
I try to design my lectures around the interests and capabilities of my students.
I try to design my curriculum around the needs of the industry
I take my students reviews and feedback very seriously.
My focus is always on quality over quantity
When possible, I use demos and hand-on activities to demonstrate the theoretical principles covered in my lectures
I have found that group work can be very effective in student learning
I also think that students benefit greatly from when knowledge is reinforced through repetition
I am constantly trying to improve my course content and the delivery of the content.
