The UW System Board of Regents met on Thursday, November 7, 2019 in Madison. The meeting included a variety of presentations and discussions focused on the scope and significance of the research performed at all UW System campuses. Presentations included the UW-Madison Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute’s study known as the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention (WRAP), UW-Milwaukee’s efforts with the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery, and the partnership between UW-Oshkosh’s Alta Resources Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and WiSys. The Assembly Floor session was held on Thursday, November 7.  The Assembly passed the following bills relating to UW System:

  • AB 531– information on suicide prevention on ID cards including Assembly Amendment 1voice vote
  • SB 142– late payments of benefits to student veterans-voice vote

The Higher Education Aids Board met on Friday, November 1 to review and share updates on several financial aid programs, including the formula for how Wisconsin Grants are awarded at the Wisconsin Technical Colleges System, private non-profit colleges, and UW Systems schools. More information on the meeting can be found in the attached PDF below.

The Assembly Committee on Regulatory Licensing Reform held an executive session on Thursday, Oct. 31, and heard AB 82- Athletes Agents Act: adopting revisions to the state’s uniform athlete agents act and providing a penalty. The committee passed the bill, including Amendment 1 and Amendment 2, in a 7-1 vote.

The Assembly Committee on Government Accountability and Oversight will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, November 6, starting at 1:00 p.m. The Committee will hear the following bill relating to UW System:

  • AB 370– UW Debt Guarantees: state debt guarantees; delegations by the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System; organizations affiliated with the UW System; and standards of conduct for certain UW System employees.

President Ray Cross, along with Regents Mike Jones, Karen Walsh, and Olivia Woodmansee, joined UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson for a series of events at UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stevens Point at Wausau on Wednesday, October 30 for the sixth stop of UW System’s All In Wisconsin tour. The tour is intended to demonstrate how the UW System meets the needs of Wisconsin and to generate additional ideas for the future. A full recap of the UW-Stevens Point event can be found here.

The next stop on the All In Wisconsin tour is UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout on November 20.

The Assembly Committee on Education held an executive session on Tuesday, October 29 and voted on AB 531: ID Card Info – requiring that student identification cards include contact information for suicide prevention hotlines, including Assembly Amendment 1, which authors worked on with UW-Madison. The committee voted to pass AB 531, including Amendment 1, in a 12-0 vote.

The Assembly Rules Committee will meet on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 starting at 4:00 p.m. to vote on the proposed calendar for the Assembly Floor Session on Thursday, November 7, 2019. The bills impacting UW System are as follows:

  • AB 161/SB 142-late payments of benefits to student veterans
  • AB 531– information on suicide prevention on ID cards

The Assembly is planning to have another floor session on Tuesday, November 12th. We will provide updates when we see the proposed calendar for this session.
