One of the benefits of our dynamic Digital Learning Environment (DLE) is our ability to extend or add capabilities to the DLE by adding new third-party tools and internally developed software add-ons (i.e., “new tools”). By adding new functions to the DLE, we can better meet the needs of teaching and learning. New tools added into the DLE through technology integration also allows our DLE users to easily and securely log into the tools and move within and between them.

Before integrating a new tool into the DLE, the requested tool is evaluated to ensure compliance with federal regulations, UW System policies, as well as the core tenets of the DLE to ensure the tool is secure, protects data privacy, and is accessible so all students benefit from the online environment.

The DLE was also designed to be “standards-based” allowing the technical integrations we build between tools to be completed more quickly (in most cases), and that data flows seamlessly and efficiently between the services such as easily linking a Kaltura video into a Canvas course.

Since bringing new tools and functionality into the DLE can also bring unwanted risk, the DLE Service team has a rigorous process for “vetting” (or reviewing, testing, and documenting) requests for new services, products, and tools before integrating them into the DLE.  We have collaborated with our institutions across the UW System to develop our new tool request process to ensure transparency, consistency, and efficiency. The time frame to complete a request depends upon the complexity of the tool’s integration and the level of risk that the new tool’s integration introduces into the DLE. The “New Tool Request Process” graphic shown below demonstrates the sequential process we follow.

To request a new new tool be integrated into the DLE, please use the new tool request form linked at the bottom of this page.  Please note you must be a UW System user to access the form.
