Teaching and Learning Philosophy

I have found that the best class periods are ones in which I’m excited about the material and have something original to say about it. This helps to peak students’ interest and get them engaged. In addition, I strive to make my courses as discussion-oriented as possible (although lecture has its place).

My ultimate goal is to have students find the material interesting, to intentionally and rigorously engage with it, to communicate their ideas to others, and to come away with a richer understanding and excitement about it. The ideas we discuss in the classes I teach are important and interesting, and I want students to feel the same about them. I therefore strive to highlight how the material is relevant to their lives, and get them to think critically about their views and opinions, and to do so in a beneficial and fun way.
