Our approach to assessing college-ready math
Additional resources in progress, including a downloadable spreadsheet with course descriptions.
Direct Admit Wisconsin requires that students have three units of “college-ready” math courses, aligning to a list of approved courses that were selected in collaboration with representatives from UW universities and the Department of Public Instruction.
For the 3rd admissions cycle (Class of 2027), we have removed a number of SCED codes from our list and shifted our approach counting math credits. The goal of this was to offer additional clarity regarding the expectations for the sequence of math courses students take, and the types of math that the UW universities are looking for.
Each course on the resulting list is assigned a unit number, indicating the sequence in which the course is expected to be taken. For admissions, students should have one of each course unit number represented on their transcript. With this, we hope to emphasize the importance of sequencing math classes in an progression that will prepare them for college-level math. A student could not take three different courses coded as Algebra I and expect to be prepared for college math, even if all three courses use an approved SCED code.
We have also included a list of courses that could qualify as a “4th credit” (i.e. requiring 3rd credit courses as a prerequisite, or courses typically taken in senior year of high school). These are not required for direct admission, but can count towards the three credit requirement (e.g. if a student is in an advanced mathematics sequence after taking Algebra I in 8th grade, they could qualify for Direct Admission with Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-calculus on their high school transcript).
We will be working with all four of our Student Information System partners (Skyward, Infinite Campus, PowerSchool, JMC) to ensure that this process for math course review is integrated into their tier tooling for the next round of admissions.
What is SCED coding, and why is it so important?
