Medical treatment includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All treatment not otherwise excluded (below).<\/li>\n<li>Using prescription medications, or use of a non-prescription drug at prescription strength.<\/li>\n<li>Using wound closing devices such as surgical glue, sutures, and staples.<\/li>\n<li>Using any devices with rigid stays or other systems designed to immobilize parts of the body.<\/li>\n<li>Administration of oxygen to treat injury or illness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Exclusions from definition of medical treatment<\/h3>\n<p>For OSHA recording purposes, medical treatment\u00a0<em><strong>excludes<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the following items:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Observation or counseling<\/strong>. Visits to a physician or other licensed health care professional solely for observation or counseling;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnostic procedures<\/strong>. The conduct of diagnostic procedures, such as x-rays and blood tests, including the administration of prescription medications used solely for diagnostic purposes (<em>e.g.<\/em>, eye drops to dilate pupils); or<\/li>\n<li><strong>First aid<\/strong>. First aid as defined below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Definition of first aid\u00a0\u2014 excluded from medical treatment<\/h3>\n<p>For OSHA recording purposes, &#8220;first aid&#8221; includes the following items.\u00a0<strong>This is a complete list<\/strong>\u00a0of all treatments considered to be first aid by OSHA.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Using a non-prescription medication at nonprescription strength<\/strong> <span class=\"small\">(NOTE: for medications available in both prescription and non-prescription form, a recommendation by a physician or other licensed health care professional to use a non-prescription medication at prescription strength is considered medical treatment for recordkeeping purposes)<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Administering tetanus immunizations<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"small\">(NOTE: other immunizations, such as Hepatitis B vaccine or rabies vaccine, are considered medical treatment)<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cleaning, flushing or soaking wounds<\/strong>\u00a0on the surface of the skin;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using wound coverings<\/strong>\u00a0such as bandages, Band-Aids\u2122, gauze pads, etc.; or using butterfly bandages or Steri-Strips\u2122\u00a0<span class=\"small\">(NOTE: other wound closing devices such as sutures, staples, etc., are considered medical treatment)<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using hot or cold therapy<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using any non-rigid means of support<\/strong>, such as elastic bandages, wraps, non-rigid back belts, etc.\u00a0<span class=\"small\">(NOTE: devices with rigid stays or other systems designed to immobilize parts of the body are considered medical treatment for recordkeeping purposes)<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using temporary immobilization devices while transporting an accident victim<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>e.g.<\/em>, splints, slings, neck collars, back boards, etc.).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drilling of a fingernail or toenail<\/strong>\u00a0to relieve pressure, or draining fluid from a blister;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using eye patches<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Removing foreign bodies from the eye<\/strong>\u00a0using only irrigation or a cotton swab;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Removing splinters or foreign material from areas other than the eye<\/strong>\u00a0by irrigation, tweezers, cotton swabs or other simple means;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using finger guards<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using massages<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"small\">(NOTE: physical therapy or chiropractic treatment are considered medical treatment for recordkeeping purposes)<\/span>; or<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drinking fluids<\/strong>\u00a0for relief of heat stress.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"color: #4a4848\">Notification requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Your campus has an obligation to notify state regulators about the following event within eight (8) hours of their occurrence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the death of any UW System employee from a work-related incident or<\/li>\n<li>the in-patient hospitalization of three or more UW System employees as a result of a work-related incident.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If either of these events, campus must contact the Department of Safety and Professional Services at 608-266-2112 during normal business hours. \u00a0During non-business hours, contact the State\u00a0<a style=\"color: #990033\" href=\"https:\/\/wem.wi.gov\/home\/about\/\">Division of Emergency Management<\/a>\u00a0at 800-943-0003.
