On June 23, 2017, President Cross approved a technical amendment to UW System Administrative Policy (SYS) 145, which was necessary due to a routine change in legal standards and business practices. Specifically, an audit review of SYS 145 recommended that the word “should” be changed to “shall” within section A.4 of the policy relating to the purchase of travel insurance.

The policy previously stated that: “every participant should be informed about the availability of, and should be required to purchase, accident and health insurance and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.” However, per inquiry with UW System Risk Management, it appeared that the business practice on campuses was to require participants to purchase, accident and health insurance and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance. Accordingly, the policy was modified by changing the word “should” to “shall,” so as to accurately reflect the mandatory requirement to purchase accident and health insurance and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.
