UWM has lifted restrictions on university-sponsored domestic travel as of July 1, 2021.

For international travel guidance, please read the university’s International Travel Policy, which also includes the form to request an exception. This policy establishes procedures and restrictions for certain international travel that may pose increased risks.

The Travel Subcommittee of the university’s Emergency Operations Center continues to review UWM-sponsored international travel, and guidelines will be updated if or when restrictions are modified.

Continue to monitor

Students and employees who have traveled within the United States or internationally should consistently monitor themselves for symptoms and follow the Wisconsin Department of Health Services: COVID-19: Travel guidance. The guidance should be followed both before leaving for your trip and prior to physically returning to campus or taking part in other UWM activities with students, faculty, staff or visitors.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state health department recommend delaying all travel until you are fully vaccinated, because travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.

Travel approvals

Travel savings has been an important part of our reduced expenses over the last year. While the COVID-19-related restrictions on travel are being lifted, budgetary challenges will continue into the next fiscal year. Therefore, all travel expenditures that are not supported with external funding should be reviewed and approved by the dean or division head, or their designee, prior to booking the travel. Most divisions at UWM are already participating in an e-workflow (TMEA) for these divisional pre-travel approvals, and all units will participate in that approval process by Sept. 1.
