EAB consultants have been introducing Navigate to key stakeholders through webinars and on-site launches. On-sites started with one of the UW early adopters, UW-Platteville, in late March and continued with UW-Parkside, UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, UW-Green Bay, UW-Superior and UW-Stevens Point. The UW-La Crosse on-site is scheduled for early May; other dates are to be determined.

Consultants explored—via student focus groups—the current student experience on campus to reveal opportunities for improvements, met with engagement teams about strategies and resources available, facilitated institutional participants’ decision-making (student intake survey, user roles/permissions, etc.) and clarified next steps. Institutions also have been reviewing UW System recommendations and arriving at decisions that reflect their alignment or differences.

During on-sites, campus participants learned more about what this student success management system means for them. UW System representatives appreciated hearing participants’ excitement, concerns and thoughtful discussions centered on student success. EAB consultants and UW System representatives shared the on-site highlights below.

DeAnn Possehl and Neil Baumgartner at the UW-Parkside on-site launch

On-site highlights

UW-Platteville is making great progress in their implementation of the student app. Their content administrator picked up the Content Administration Tool very quickly and focused on making specific and actionable content. They’re expecting to implement the app in a little under four months.

Kali Lang of EAB and Jerel Benton at the UW-Superior on-site launch

UW-Parkside Provost Rob Ducoffe said, “If you’re asking us how far we’ll go to make this successful, this is our top priority.”

UW-Stout has gathered a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable team and—although their on-site managed to get snowed out—they made the most of the time they had and provided great feedback, such as ensuring that business services is involved early on.

UW-River Falls Program Owner Wes Chapin is doing an incredible job leading an implementation complicated by a primarily faculty advising model. He has graciously solicited and accepted faculty feedback along the way and identified 12 faculty champions to engage early on, even as part of the leadership team.

UW-Green Bay demonstrated a forward-thinking, intentional approach to staffing their leadership team. Clif Ganyard, program owner, contacted his counterpart at Washburn University and the app administrator at Utica College to learn about the best staffed leadership teams.

UW-Superior had thoughtful discussions about how Navigate could help them support students’ sense of belonging, build on their students’ grit, hone institutional research requests for higher-level analyses and impact student success in coordination with other initiatives underway.

UW-Stevens Point Program Owner Gretel Stock-Kupperman and Kari Van Den Elzen, project manager and app administrator, have been extremely thoughtful about defining who should be a part of this, and what faculty engagement/rollout looks like long term. They did a fantastic job of pulling together a lot of folks on campus for their first demo, and the feedback has been extremely positive coming out of last week. Special shout-out to Kari, who also currently is finishing up school as a student at UW-Stevens Point!

EAB data transfers from UW institutions

In April, the UW System Office of Information Security issued a memorandum (posted in Project Team Resources on the UW System Navigate implementation website) on compliance with system security policy. This addressed EAB Data Integration Services (DIS) options and related technology implementation issues. UW System Administration also reviewed EAB’s completed Higher Ed Cloud Vendor Assessment Tool (HECVAT) of information security and data protection approaches and the Amazon Web Services Organization Control (SOC III) report on security, processing, and privacy protocols.

Next Steps

May 2019: The UW System project team will begin supporting cross-institutional communities of practice for engagement team leads to enhance sharing of insights, challenges, strategies and solutions, including through webinars and listserv discussions starting later in May. Institutions are invited to adapt the infographic PDF with their branding, data and other tweaks. We suggest working with a graphic artist on your campus to do so using vector editing software (such as Illustrator), and we appreciate a copy of your finished product.

Other infographic examples include:

UW-Platteville’s infographic on Navigating a Coordinated Student Support Network

EAB’s most popular student success infographics

The UW System Navigate FAQ also is posted on the UW System Navigate implementation website homepage and, as additional questions are submitted, will be updated.

Some institutions have recorded their Navigate platform demonstrations to share with faculty and staff unable to participate in that presentation. One example is UW-La Crosse.

The question of how to best engage faculty was raised at some on-site launches.
