End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a serious disease that results in the progressive loss of kidney function. Loss of kidney function leads to the blood not being cleaned and leads to life-threatening complications. Currently, no treatments exist for many types of ESRD necessitating that patient receive regular kidney dialysis with the ultimate goal of receiving a kidney transplant. Even after kidney transplantation, many complications can occur that are often difficult to identify early and can lead to loss of transplanted organ. We are working on a new high-resolution, label-free imaging tool based on mid-infrared light that can identify patients who are going to undergo complications earlier, at which time intervention can lead to more successful treatment, retention of the transplanted organ and improved quality of life.
