{"id":11559,"date":"2021-04-12T11:34:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T16:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/?page_id=11559"},"modified":"2021-04-12T12:08:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T17:08:03","slug":"valerie-barske","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/opid-advisory-council\/valerie-barske\/","title":{"rendered":"Valerie Barske"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"cfct-build-11559\" class=\"cfct-build grid\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-9 cfct-block\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cfct-module uwsa-rich-text\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"cfct-mod-content copy\"><h3><strong>UW-Stevens Point<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Co-Director, <em>Wisconsin Teaching Fellows &amp; Scholars<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor, History | Coordinator,\u00a0International Studies and Peace Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">Valerie Barske is a Professor of History and Coordinator of International Studies and Peace Studies with teaching and service commitments in Women\u2019s and Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.\u00a0 Barske received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures with disciplinary emphases in History and Anthropology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2009. Her ethnographic fieldwork and archival research on female activists in Okinawa, Japan has been funded by a Fulbright IIE Fellowship, a Blakemore Foundation Fellowship, and a Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Research Fellowship.\u00a0 Barske also received a UW System Fellowship with the Institute for Research in the Humanities.\u00a0 As a scholarly teacher, Barske combines anthropological theories of embodiment with feminist pedagogical practices into her own \u201csignature pedagogy\u201d for teaching History and International Studies.\u00a0 Barske employs embodied learning as an inclusive strength-based approach that helps students to co-construct \u201cbrave spaces\u201d for taking new actions, to think with and through movement, and to explore epistemologies that valorize affect, agency, and intersectional subjectivities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><div class=\"col-md-3 cfct-block\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cfct-module uwsa-rich-text\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"cfct-mod-content copy\"><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/129\/2021\/04\/Barske_UWSTP_Headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Barske_UWSTP_Headshot\" width=\"397\" height=\"497\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12 cfct-block\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cfct-module cfct-pullquote\">\n\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"normal fct-mod-content\">\n\t<p>I am beyond thrilled to join the OPID Advisory Council as the incoming Co-Director of the Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars Program.\u00a0 I have participated in the program as both a Fellow and a Scholar.\u00a0 My SoTL research projects include investigations of embodied learning for teaching gender in the History classroom and growth mindset interventions for teaching general education courses in Global Awareness.\u00a0 At the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, I served as the first Faculty Fellow with the Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning.\u00a0 I developed, organized, and facilitated a Faculty Learning Community with members across all five academic colleges on our campus focusing on the theme of retention in the classroom.\u00a0 I am excited to begin this new journey with OPID and the WTFS Program.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":3323,"featured_media":0,"parent":2403,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-11559","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","cfct-can-haz-build"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/11559","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3323"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=11559"}],"version-history":[{"count":26,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/11559\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":11628,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/11559\/revisions\/11628"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2403"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/opid\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=11559"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
