UW-Oshkosh

Instructor and Associate Dean of Students | Dean of Students Office

My name is Houa Xiong. I am one of the Associate Deans in the Dean of Students Office. My favorite part of working at UW Oshkosh is that I have the opportunity to interact with students one-on-one, to learn about their interests, skills, abilities and passions. I also enjoy helping them discover strategies to reach their personal, academic and life goals. I taught an Academic and Career Exploration from 2004-2018 and started teaching a Hmong Language, Culture & Learning class since fall 2019. I spend my spare time with my family biking, taking walks, watching movies, playing games, and taking road trips.

Some best practices I have used in my teaching are:

  • I have learned to speak in simple terminologies so that anyone can understand
  • I have alternative delivery tools (lecture, power point, video, story) to teach the same content
  • I allocate time for students to reflect and apply concepts they have learned in the classroom to real life experiences when possible
  • I invite guest speakers/lectures to present on special/related topics
