Mathematics faculty and instructional staff from around UW System participated in the January 2021 virtual “Showoff / Showdown” to exchange ideas on incorporating active learning strategies to support student success. That webinar was among the 2021 UW System Math Initiative events, which included Community of Practice sessions and Math Steering Committee meetings. 

Find 2020 events

UW System Math Initiative events–including Math Steering Committee, Institutional Change Team and Education Subcommittee meetings and workshops–moved online in spring 2020. While the focus remained on Math Initiative goals, the support from UW System included math-specific professional development for those shifting to online and hybrid instruction as well as face-to-face teaching and learning.

Find 2019 events

UW System Math Initiative events in 2019 included Institutional Change Team workshop and Math Steering Committee meetings included here, as well as other convenings not listed separately. Year two of the three-year grant-funded work included a focus on math pathways for the professional programs of Business, Education and Nursing; development of an Education Subcommittee; and early work on active learning, building community in the classroom and exploration of co-requisite models.

Find 2017-2018 events

The UW System Office of Academic & Student Affairs brought mathematics faculty together in 2017 for a workshop on implementation of a systemwide common cut score. Grant-writing work begun in 2017 led to external funding for the UW System Math Initiative for the calendar years of 2018 through 2021. Year one (2018, shown here) of the grant-funded work included a focus on math pathways for Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and STEM.

The Math Initiative work focuses on student success in mathematics, a story shared with the UW System Board of Regents multiple times, including through this UW-Superior student's remarks in October 2019.

The Math Steering Committee has met regularly since 2017 and continues to convene to build on Math Initiative strategies and goals.

Math Initiative workshops, including this April 2019 event, provided time for cross-discipline work in Institutional Change Teams as well as cross-institutional time with peers in similar academic, advising, institutional research, and leadership roles.

Sue Cui of the Ascendium Education Group, the Math Initiative funder, joined Institutional Change Team workshop participants for an interactive session in September 2019.
