SUMMARY:Math Steering Committee: Discussion on Joint College Readiness in Mathematics Statement
DESCRIPTION:The UW System Math Steering Committee will convene via Zoom (a link was sent June 2) to discuss the Joint College Readiness in Mathematics Statement. \nThe joint committee has collaborated on a statement to outline the necessary mathematical knowledge\, skills\, and habits for students planning to attend Wisconsin postsecondary education. Committee members (see roster) weighed in with feedback to develop the statement. They now are soliciting broader feedback from their respective institutions\, including through the Math Steering Committee as representatives of UW System institutions. The joint committee’s goal is to finalize the statement—with endorsements from the UW System Math Steering Committee\, the Wisconsin Technical College System\, Wisconsin Mathematics Council\, Inc.; and the Wisconsin Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators—in time for distribution to Wisconsin K-12 partners by the beginning of the 2022-23 school year. \n

SUMMARY:Math Initiative Community of Practice: April 29 Session
DESCRIPTION:Focus: Strategies to Care for Your Own Mental Health and Well-Being \nDescription: The 2021-2022 school year has hardly represented a return to “normal.” As highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education in February 2022\, a team at UW-Milwaukee took a trauma-informed approach to crafting their responses this academic year to honor the lessons of the COVID-19 public health crisis that has now spanned two full calendar years.  This session covered how research at UW-Milwaukee and beyond has illuminated faculty and staff experiences during the pandemic and what instructors can do in their personal and professional lives to combat the corrosive effects of the pandemic. As time allowed\, the discussion extended to how faculty can detect and respond to stressed students during this time with the use of trauma-informed classroom practices. \nPresenters: \n\nDimitri Topitzes\, Ph.D.\, LCSW\, is a Professor of Social Work at UW-Milwaukee and also serves as the Director of Clinical Services for the Institute for Child and Family Well-Being. He conducts applied research\, partnering with community-based agencies to implement and test innovative trauma-responsive programming. He created the Trauma-Informed Care Graduate Certificate at UW-Milwaukee and teaches master’s courses in trauma counseling\, mindfulness\, and community building.\nAdam Jussel\, J.D.\, serves as the Dean of Students for UW-Milwaukee\, where he helps assist with student advocacy and engagement; support resources\, including basic needs; crisis response; and campus healing initiatives. Before UW\, Adam was the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Conduct at Washington State University. He previously represented WSU as an assistant attorney general and has a certification in higher education law and policy from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Adam served as a faculty member for the Foundations Track at the 2018 Gehring Academy and has been fortunate to speak at a number of conferences about how to better serve students\, including the National Conference on Law and Higher Education\, University of Vermont Legal Issues Conference\, the Higher Education Alcohol Other Drug & Wellness Summit\, and the National Conference on Campus Sexual Assault and Violence. Adam was also a member of NASPA’s Culture of Respect CORE Constructs Advisory Board\, advising NASPA on creating best practices regarding sex and gender-based violence.\n\nAccess resources: Mathematics faculty\, staff and administrators at UW System institutions are invited to enroll in the Math Initiative CoP Canvas course at https://uws-td.instructure.com/enroll/XTXRCM\, where they will find resources and the recording link.  \nInformation: To join the mathematics CoP distribution list and receive notices of events and the Zoom link\, please contact Sandra Kallio at apulvermacher@uwsa.edu. \nEvaluation: Participants are asked to complete a brief evaluation.

SUMMARY:UW-Superior webinar: Student Perception of Co-requisite Model for Math Support
DESCRIPTION:Description: UW-Superior moved to a co-requisite model of developmental mathematics support in fall 2020. Presenters discussed their implementation of a single co-requisite support course that supports students in two credit-bearing gateway courses—Statistics and Quantitative Reasoning.  This model of one support for two different gateway tracks is a unique approach by the UW-Superior math department. In fall 2021\, the presenters performed surveys and interviews to determine the student reactions to the new model. Additionally\, the grades of co-requisite students since fall 2020 have been analyzed. This talk focused on the details of the co-requisite model for Stats and Quantitative Reasoning and the perceptions of students enrolled in the support course in fall 2021. \nPresenters: Kristin Riesgraf and Josh Stangle of UW-Superior \nSuggested audience: UW math department chairs and Math Steering Committee members \nAccess: Mathematics faculty\, staff and administrators at UW System institutions are invited to enroll in the Math Initiative CoP Canvas course at https://uws-td.instructure.com/enroll/XTXRCM\,\, where resources are posted. \nNote: Alice Pulvermacher forwarded information including the Zoom link to the Math Steering Committee and mathematics department chairs. For information\, contact apulvermacher@uwsa.edu.

SUMMARY:Math Initiative Showoff/Showdown
DESCRIPTION:The Showoff/Showdown included brief presentations by UW System colleagues who participated in the Math Initiative June 2020 professional development workshops on active learning for equitable instruction and development of co-requisite math courses — or who later  “enrolled” in those Canvas courses. Presentations via the Canvas learning management system covered how participants have adapted important principles such as active learning\, building community and student engagement in the fall 2020 environment\, how that was received\, and what they learned that will impact whether or how they repeat that approach. \nDescriptions of each session in “Active Learning” and “Building Community” tracks are included in the presentation schedule. pdf\n The workshop was open to colleagues at all UW System institutions.
