The Universities of Wisconsin continue to review the Frequently Asked Questions Document.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secretary McMahon Confirmation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On March 3, via a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1191\/vote_119_1_00099.htm\">vote<\/a> of 51-45, the U.S. Senate confirmed Linda McMahon to be the next Secretary of Education.\u00a0At the time of her confirmation, Secretary McMahon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-senate-confirms-linda-mcmahon-13th-secretary-of-education-0\">released this statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NIH Indirect Cost Rates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leaders and faculty at the Universities of Wisconsin, UW\u2013Madison, and UW-Milwaukee discussed the impact of federal health research funding on Wisconsin at a news conference in the wake of a federal proposal to limit National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/news\/archive\/universities-of-wisconsin-uw-madison-uw-milwaukee-leaders-and-faculty-discuss-impact-of-federal-health-research-funding-on-wisconsin\/\">Read the news release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the news conference, President Rothman cited the important research at UW\u2013Madison, UW-Milwaukee and across the Universities of Wisconsin and said cutting federal funding \u201chas real implications for families and communities counting on us to find solutions to our most pressing needs.\u201d Chancellor Mnookin emphasized that indiscriminate reductions in research funding \u201cpose significant risk to our state and nation\u2019s future\u201d and harm the ability for universities like UW\u2013Madison to make critical, life-saving discoveries and train students to be leaders. \u201cLet us work together to protect and preserve the vital research work around us that is poised to make critical new discoveries and save lives in Wisconsin and all across the nation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>You may view a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_EO6abwiezk\">video of the news conference<\/a> and read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/government-relations\/2025\/03\/07\/wi-congressional-delegation-letter-supporting-nih-funding\/\">Letter to Wisconsin&#8217;s Congressional Delegation<\/a> from businesses and organizations supporting NIH funding.<\/p>\n<p>In the background of this, on March 5, a federal judge <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-nih-medical-research-funding-cut-indirect-costs-e7629d0d45d141b2ac47c54550411aff\">issued a nationwide preliminary injunction<\/a>\u00a0that halts the implementation of a 15% indirect cost rate on NIH grants and contracts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Federal Updates Public Web Page Refreshed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Universities of Wisconsin (UW) refreshed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/government-relations\/federal-updates-working-group\/federal-updates\/\">Federal Updates web page<\/a>\u00a0for the public to learn about the federal issues the UW is monitoring. The site provides a dashboard view of the various issues organized by topic, with a summary and links related to the topic.
