{"id":2675,"date":"2020-01-27T15:10:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T21:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/government-relations\/?p=2675&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=2675"},"modified":"2020-01-27T17:18:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T23:18:35","slug":"assembly-committee-on-colleges-and-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/government-relations\/2020\/01\/27\/assembly-committee-on-colleges-and-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities \u2013 Jan 23. public hearing and executive session recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities held an\u00a0executive session\u00a0and public hearing on Thursday, January 23.<\/p>\n<p>During the executive session, the committee considered the following bills relating to the UW System:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab444\">AB 444<\/a>\u2013 Free expression: free expression within the University of Wisconsin System, providing an exemption from rule-making procedures, and granting rule-making authority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The Committee voted to pass the bill, including <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/related\/amendments\/ab444\/asa1_ab444\"><strong><em>Amendment<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> Substitute <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, in a 8-6 vote. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab536\">AB 536<\/a>\u2013 Career Advancement Scholarship: establishing a career advancement scholarship program and making an appropriation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The Committee voted to pass the bill, including <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/related\/amendments\/ab536\/aa1_ab536\"><strong><em>Amendment 1<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, in a 14-0 vote. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the executive session, the committee held a public hearing and heard the following bills relating to the UW System:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab230\">AB 230<\/a>\u2013 Military Transcripts: transferring academic credits from military transcripts to University of Wisconsin System schools and technical colleges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>See below for written testimony provided by President Ray Cross for information only.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab556\">AB 556<\/a>\u2013 Teaching Hours: recognizing teaching hours for providing certain extension services of the University of Wisconsin System.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Ben Van Pelt, UW-Madison Assistant Director for State Relations, and Heidi Zoerb, Associate Dean for External Relations for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, provided verbal testimony on AB 566 (see below).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2019\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab663\">AB 663<\/a>\u2013 Veteran Application Fees: exempting veterans and members of the armed forces from admissions application fees at University of Wisconsin System schools and technical colleges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities held an\u00a0executive session\u00a0and public hearing on Thursday, January 23.
