\/><\/a>This 2018 UW System Economic Impact Study updates a 2002\u00a0economic impact study for the UW System done by NorthStar\u00a0Economics of Madison, Wis. The 2002 study reported an economic\u00a0impact of $9.5 billion on the Wisconsin economy. It also estimated\u00a0that UW System economic activity supported or created 150,000 jobs\u00a0and generated $408 million in local and state tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Since that study, the UW System has grown in enrollment, research\u00a0activity, economic development engagement, and educational\u00a0programs and outreach. The breadth of UW System activity is striking.\u00a0The UW System has a presence in every county in Wisconsin and its\u00a0graduates live and work throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>A significant challenge to completing an economic impact study\u00a0for the UW System is finding and recording all economic activity\u00a0associated with the work of the UW System, including its campuses\u00a0and many related groups and organizations throughout the state.\u00a0This study reports on the economic activity of the UW System in the\u00a0most conservative terms.<\/p>\n<p>This study was completed by researching and compiling spending data\u00a0from UW System activities for the 2016-17 fiscal year in the following\u00a0major areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UW campuses<\/li>\n<li>UW hospitals<\/li>\n<li>UW startup companies<\/li>\n<li>UW student spending<\/li>\n<li>UW visitor spending<\/li>\n<li>UW research park activities<\/li>\n<li>UW affiliated organizations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spending is the primary focus of economic impact studies because\u00a0money spent in local and regional activities generates further\u00a0economic activity, jobs, and tax revenues while cycling through local\u00a0and regional economies.<\/p>\n<p>In this study, the overall economic impact of the UW System\u00a0($24 billion), the jobs generated or supported (nearly 167,000), and\u00a0the amount of taxes generated ($1.1 billion) are explained in detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":0,"parent":895,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-898","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","cfct-can-haz-build"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/898","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=898"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/898\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1957,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/898\/revisions\/1957"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/895"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/economic-development\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=898"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
