program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">UW-La Crosse accounting students are gaining invaluable experience they could never obtain from a textbook.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Through UWL\u2019s Community Engaged Learning program, Assistant Professor\u00a0<a class=\"profile-tip-trigger\" href=\"\/profile\/meklund\/\">Mehtap Eklund\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0cost accounting class (ACC 325) is offering financial guidance to Mid-City Steel, a La Crosse-based steel fabricator.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The partnership allows students to discover and address accounting challenges that often arise in the real world but are difficult to simulate in the classroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAccounting education is one of the scholarly fields heavily connected with professional life,\u201d Eklund explains. \u201cCommunity Engaged Learning enhances the educational experience for students by challenging them to solve real community issues while applying the knowledge gained in the classroom.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">During the spring semester, students toured Mid-City Steel to gain a deeper understanding of the company\u2019s needs and manufacturing processes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paul Bagniefski, president of Mid-City Steel and a UWL alum, shared background about the business as well as his passion for working in the steel industry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once they were familiar with the company, the students analyzed data and developed an action plan for Mid-City Steel\u2019s decision-making on key issues.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis whole experiential learning project provides learning the students would not get in a typical classroom environment,\u201d Eklund says, echoing Accountancy Department Chair\u00a0<a class=\"profile-tip-trigger\" href=\"\/profile\/wmaas\/\">Will Maas<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"list-item-1\">\n<figure class=\"image-style-c\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwlax.edu\/contentassets\/d2492d337f8a4841b98d59100cb0f8ab\/2023-uwl-accountancy-mid-city-steel--6.jpg\/Large\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Students familiarized themselves with the company so they would be better prepared to offer insight and analysis on key issues.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cDuring typical student assignments, they get straightforward data and assumptions from a textbook and are told to find the \u2018correct answer,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cTaking a tour of a company to understand the manufacturing processes and then working on actual data to make decisions requires a much more detailed analysis with many variables.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Students say they enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the classroom and see how skills they\u2019re developing on campus can help support a local business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI liked applying concepts from class to a real-world company and situation,\u201d says Katie Woletz, who\u2019s majoring in accountancy and finance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Adds accountancy major Andrew Stehr: \u201cThe field trip put our learning into perspective, making me feel like what I was learning meant something.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bagniefski, who earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in accountancy in 2006, says he was eager to partner with alma mater to create opportunities for students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Higher education plays a key role in the La Crosse community, he notes, and partnerships like this can be mutually beneficial.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cProbably the biggest reason was to simply be involved in the students\u2019 education, no matter how big or small,\u201d he says. \u201cKnowing we have positively impacted students in some way is extremely satisfying.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Through the class, students developed UWL\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/info\/eagle-advantage\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Eagle Advantage<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0competencies that are highly sought by employers. They also learned the importance of assisting in the community.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This aligns with the mission of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/accountancy\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Accountancy Department<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/cba\/about-the-cba\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">College of Business Administration (CBA)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and was supported by Eklund, Maas, Community Engagement Coordinator\u00a0<a class=\"profile-tip-trigger\" href=\"\/profile\/lklein\/\">Lisa Klein<\/a>\u00a0and CBA Dean\u00a0<a class=\"profile-tip-trigger\" href=\"\/profile\/tbrooks\/\">TJ Brooks<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Beyond the practical accounting experience, Eklund says it was inspirational for students to learn from someone who was once in their shoes, and who has gone on to find success professionally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIn addition to the project details, Paul Bagniefski shared his amazing personal experiences in his professional life, which started as an accountancy student at UWL,\u201d Eklund says. \u201cHe emphasized the importance of having an accountancy degree from UWL and getting a CPA in his successful career path.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"list-item-2\">\n<figure class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwlax.edu\/contentassets\/d2492d337f8a4841b98d59100cb0f8ab\/2023-uwl-accountancy-mid-city-steel--29.jpg\/Large\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>La Crosse-based Mid-City Steel has worked on projects all over North America \u2014 from the Fort Knox Gold Mine in Fairbanks, Alaska, to a grain mill in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>About the program<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">UWL\u2019s Community Engaged Learning program matches local businesses and organizations with faculty experts seeking real-world experiences and skill applications for their students.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Organizations can submit project ideas through the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/community\/uwl-community-idea-exchange-submission\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UWL Community Idea Exchange<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Faculty\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwlax.ca1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_43otpnkF6BSGtRX\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">can apply<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to have their course designated for Community Engaged Learning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Written by UW-La Crosse University Marketing &amp;
