Annabelle Howat, a health care administration major, has found countless opportunities in and out of the classroom to prepare for a career serving the aging population.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

With a passion for helping people, Annabelle Howat knows the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire\u2019s health care administration program \u2014 with its \u201ca head for business and a heart for caring\u201d slogan \u2014 is perfect for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to help people but in more of a business manner,\u201d says Howat of Aurora, Illinois. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect mix of caring for others in a \u2018hands-off\u2019 manner but still seeing how my decisions impact those I\u2019m serving. I want to be an advocate for people who are underserved, like the aging population, who often are overlooked yet deserve fulfilling lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howat, who will graduate in May 2024 with a health care administration major, minors in\u00a0management<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Spanish for health professionals<\/a>, and a certificate in\u00a0leadership studies<\/a>, credits \u201csupportive and knowledgeable\u201d professors with providing meaningful experiences in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lindsey Creapeau<\/a>, an assistant professor of management who Howat says is \u201cpassionate about everything she does,\u201d is among those who encourage Howat to \u201capply my knowledge and dive deeper into the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creapeau describes Howat as \u201cincredibly passionate and engaged\u201d with a \u201cstrong desire and ability to serve her residents with compassion and quality care.\u201d Given her \u201cpositive and optimistic outlook,\u201d Howat\u2019s peers \u201cgravitate toward her and look to her as a leader, which is crucial in our field,\u201d Creapeau says, adding that Howat\u2019s skillset and demeanor are a \u201cperfect fit\u201d for long-term health care.<\/p>\n

Howat\u2019s management classes teach her about healthcare-related business models, she\u2019s developing her language skills and learning about diverse cultures in her Spanish program, and she\u2019s becoming a better leader and team member thanks to her leadership courses. Together, they\u2019ll help her meet the needs of even more people who need care as they age.<\/p>\n

As a\u00a0student researcher<\/a>, Howat helped low-income people access fresh fruits and vegetables, research she calls \u201ceye-opening and fulfilling.\u201d She says helping people access healthy foods and reduce their food insecurity makes her \u201cfeel like I\u2019m part of something bigger than myself, which is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another project, Howat measured the quality of care in nursing homes. That research \u2014 which Howat presented at a national conference \u2014 made her even \u201cmore passionate about becoming an administrator to serve and advocate for the aging population.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howat says\u00a0studying abroad<\/a>\u00a0in Spain, where she lived with a host parent and interacted with native Spaniards, \u201copened my eyes to differences in cultural norms such as food, schooling, work-life balance and healthcare,\u201d giving her \u201ca new perspective and respect for different cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June, Howat will begin a yearlong administrative residency \u2014 required of all HCAD majors \u2014 at an Oregon facility that has a continuum of care, including skilled-nursing, assisted and independent living.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to learn how each part of this community functions, apply my leadership skills and provide quality care to the residents,\u201d Howat says. \u201cI want to learn everything I can so I can become the best administrator possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howat hopes to then work as an administrator at a skilled nursing facility or nursing home.<\/p>\n
