I want to be an advocate for people who are underserved, like the aging population, who often are overlooked yet deserve fulfilling lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howat, who will graduate in May 2024 with a health care administration major, minors in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwec.edu\/academics\/programs\/undergraduate\/management\/\">management<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwec.edu\/academics\/programs\/undergraduate\/spanish-health-professions\/\">Spanish for health professionals<\/a>, and a certificate in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwec.edu\/academics\/programs\/undergraduate\/leadership-studies\/\">leadership studies<\/a>, credits \u201csupportive and knowledgeable\u201d professors with providing meaningful experiences in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwec.edu\/profiles\/creapelj\/\">Dr. Lindsey Creapeau<\/a>, an assistant professor of management who Howat says is \u201cpassionate about everything she does,\u201d is among those who encourage Howat to \u201capply my knowledge and dive deeper into the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creapeau describes Howat as \u201cincredibly passionate and engaged\u201d with a \u201cstrong desire and ability to serve her residents with compassion and quality care.\u201d Given her \u201cpositive and optimistic outlook,\u201d Howat\u2019s peers \u201cgravitate toward her and look to her as a leader, which is crucial in our field,\u201d Creapeau says, adding that Howat\u2019s skillset and demeanor are a \u201cperfect fit\u201d for long-term health care.<\/p>\n<p>Howat\u2019s management classes teach her about healthcare-related business models, she\u2019s developing her language skills and learning about diverse cultures in her Spanish program, and she\u2019s becoming a better leader and team member thanks to her leadership courses. Together, they\u2019ll help her meet the needs of even more people who need care as they age.<\/p>\n<p>As a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwec.edu\/orsp\/\">student researcher<\/a>, Howat helped low-income people access fresh fruits and vegetables, research she calls \u201ceye-opening and fulfilling.\u201d She says helping people access healthy foods and reduce their food insecurity makes her \u201cfeel like I\u2019m part of something bigger than myself, which is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another project, Howat measured the quality of care in nursing homes.
