{"id":7508,"date":"2022-02-15T14:15:12","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T20:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin-new\/?post_type=campus_story&#038;p=7508"},"modified":"2022-02-15T14:15:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T20:15:12","slug":"new-immersive-simulator-lets-game-players-reimagine-land-use-based-on-real-science","status":"publish","type":"campus_story","link":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/story\/new-immersive-simulator-lets-game-players-reimagine-land-use-based-on-real-science\/","title":{"rendered":"New Immersive Simulator Lets Game Players Reimagine Land Use Based on Real Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7509\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7509\" style=\"width: 736px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2022\/02\/MAD_land-use-simulator_tutorial_1.png\" alt=\"Photo of land use simulator\" width=\"736\" height=\"414\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To get started, iPlan players use Google Maps to model any selected region, divided into around 200 parcels labeled by land use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UW\u2013Madison researchers teamed with New England conservation nonprofit\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/\">Mass Audubon<\/a>\u00a0to create an online learning game that lets players model how different zoning choices would affect the environment, jobs, housing and other real-world factors for any location in the contiguous U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Built using a variety of state and federal data sets, the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.i-plan.us\/\">free game, known as iPlan<\/a>, lets players simulate different land-use scenarios and see the changing effects on their community \u2013 the way more needed housing in a certain location might further imperil a threatened species, for example, or how fewer factories would decrease pollution but also cost jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the key things that people learn when they use iPlan is that there are trade-offs across different outcomes,\u201d lead game developer\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcer.wisc.edu\/About\/Staff\/2518\"><b>Andrew Ruis<\/b><\/a>\u00a0says. \u201cFor example, you can lower greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change, but without innovation, most of the ways to do that also reduce housing or jobs or commercial activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruis is associate director for research at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epistemicanalytics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epistemic Analytics<\/a>, a lab within the School of Education\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcer.wisc.edu\/\">Wisconsin<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcer.wisc.edu\/\">Center for Education Research<\/a> focused on creating novel approaches and computational tools to improve the teaching and assessment of complex thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery land-use decision has impacts,\u201d Ruis explains. \u201cThe extent to which you prioritize different impacts is a social question. It\u2019s about what people value and what they care about.
