The Appleton East High School graduate originally planned to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in film production, but things changed drastically with the internship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was suddenly getting an experience that had me learning very quickly about screenwriting, the career I intend to pursue,\u201d she said. \u201cI made the very big decision to finish the year at UW Oshkosh, receive my associate degree and be done with school entirely. Instead of moving on and completing my bachelor\u2019s degree, I will be moving out to L.A. to work in the film industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6764\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_Painting-1-180x240-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of movie poster: Rylene Houterman\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Movie poster: Rylene Houterman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Foth has been working with screenwriter Michael Stagliano\u2015someone she said she was lucky enough to meet when he was visiting Wisconsin in August 2020. She kept in touch after the initial meeting and several months later he asked her to intern for him. Since most of his work is done virtually, she was able to work for Stagliano while still living in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>Foth was included in meetings with producers and directors. She listened to them develop scrips and provide notes. She\u2019s had the chance to read Stagliano\u2019s scrips and talk through them with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael often gets hired to write a script based off of a book,\u201d Foth said. \u201cI have been lucky enough to talk through the process of turning these books into scripts and even sharing my own ideas with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s taken notes during calls and done research, if needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a part of the process of Michael\u2019s script development has helped me figure out how to be a better writer as well,\u201d she said. \u201cI have been applying what I am learning to my own writing and have seen a major improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Steady mentor<\/h3>\n<p>Stagliano, who owns his own entertainment company, Nerdy Pop Entertainment, has been writing professionally for about five years. He works with companies like Netflix, DC, Hasbro, Vertigo and Voyage and runs what he says is the largest screenwriting group in Hollywood called Deadline Junkies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_IMG-7880-446x595-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities campus alumna Maizie Foth.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_IMG-7880-446x595-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_IMG-7880-446x595-1.jpg 446w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\u201cMaizie has an ability to capture the voice of young teens\/adolescents that is reminiscent of Taylor Swift,\u201d he said. \u201cShe makes those characters feel real and three-dimensional. She has a true talent for writing stories. Moreover, she is relentlessly eager to learn and that is probably the biggest quality I saw in her that made me want to offer her an internship. It\u2019s not always the case you find a 20-something who understands the value of learning and has the ambition to see their dream realized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stagliano said he met Foth \u201cby chance\u201d when he was in the area and talking about screenwriting as a career to someone Foth knows. He said Foth seem very interested in screenwriting, and he asked her for a sample of her writing.<\/p>\n<p>He said he admires Foth\u2019s ambition and was happy to offer her a chance with his company to continue developing as a screenwriter.<\/p>\n<h3>Earning college credit<\/h3>\n<p>Foth looked for options to get credit for her internship experience and she worked with her UWO Fox Cities adviser, Chelsea Breyer, and UWO Career and Professional Development staff at the Student Success Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning of her internship, she was able to work with her supervisor (Stagliano) to set some goals regarding her desire to learn more about screenwriting, editing and the entertainment industry,\u201d said Chrissy Lambie, UWO internship coordinator. \u201cShe had developed a great relationship and they were able to work quite collaboratively despite the pandemic and his location on the West Coast. I believe Maizie got a lot out of this experience and that it was something that invigorated her desire to explore career opportunities in screenwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lambie said Foth earned a total of five credits\u2015three for her internship hours (Interdisciplinary Studies 399) and two for a course add-on for students doing more than 140 hours (Interdisciplinary Studies 442 L&amp;S Co-op).<\/p>\n<h3>Developing scripts<\/h3>\n<p>Foth said the internship has resulted in support for the work she does with her own ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I write a draft, I send it off to him (Stagliano) and then he reads it and provides me with notes,\u201d she said. \u201cLuckily for me, we have very similar tastes in film and TV genres so I often know when he will like a story that I am developing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_DSC00908-3-595x335-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities campus alumna Maizie Foth\" width=\"595\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_DSC00908-3-595x335-1.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2021\/07\/OSH_Fox_screenwriting-career_DSC00908-3-595x335-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first script she wrote was a short film called Stargazing, which was a coming of age story about a girl struggling with depression. Foth then wrote a short film called Oh Sweetie\u2015a horror story about a girl who receives odd texts from her mom as creepy things begin to happen in her home.<\/p>\n<p>Foth currently is working on writing a TV pilot script for her show called Juice Box\u2015a dark fantasy about a girl who becomes stranded in a fantasy realm while searching for her father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have found that fantasy is my favorite to write because I absolutely love world building,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gives me the opportunity to really show my creativity with my writing. I love to write horror, too, but fantasy will always be my favorite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She knew in her junior year of high school that she wanted to be a screenwriter, but interestingly was not involved with theater or film. It wasn\u2019t until she got to UWO Fox Cities that she took film classes.<\/p>\n<p>She said a creative writing class in fall 2020 with Bill Gillard, associate professor of English at the Fox Cities campus and associate department chair for the access campuses, helped her develop her skills.
