The collection includes interviews with Wisconsin residents about their frontline and home front experiences during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War.<\/p>\n<p><em>Listening to War<\/em>\u00a0brings together almost 500 oral history interviews with Wisconsin veterans and civilians from 20 libraries, museums and historical societies around the state. Many of these recordings were in outdated analog formats that were at risk of becoming unusable. The project aimed to digitize, preserve and provide access to these stories to share them with a broader audience. The statewide effort was coordinated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/recollectionwisconsin.org\/\">Recollection Wisconsin<\/a>\u00a0in partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinhistory.org\">Wisconsin Historical Society<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wisvetsmuseum.com\">Wisconsin Veterans Museum<\/a>, and supported by grants from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>\u00a0(NEH).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/murphylibrary\/collections\/special-collections\/\">Murphy Library Special Collections\/Area Research Center<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"\/cassh\/oral-history-program\/\">Oral History Program<\/a>\u00a0contributed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/recollectionwisconsin.org\/ltw\/uw-la-crosse\">90 oral histories to the project<\/a>. Stories from La Crosse area residents include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/content.wisconsinhistory.org\/digital\/collection\/wioralhistory\/id\/299\/rec\/1\">Anne Weisse<\/a>, who served as a Club Director for the U.S. Army Special Services unit, a recreation and entertainment-focused unit for enlisted men, during and immediately after World War II.<\/li>\n<li>Marine veteran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.wisconsinhistory.org\/digital\/collection\/wioralhistory\/id\/263\/rec\/1\">George Nygaard<\/a>, who recalls assisting at the 2nd Battle of Khe Sanh in Vietnam and discusses life after returning home, including adjustments, protests, and viewpoints on the war.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/content.wisconsinhistory.org\/digital\/collection\/wioralhistory\/id\/283\/rec\/2\">Chia Xiong<\/a>, a Hmong refugee who recounts his experiences as a soldier fighting against the Vietnamese, his ultimate decision to leave Laos, the conditions of refugee camps, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Listening to War<\/em>\u00a0highlights the importance of the UWL Oral History Program and the preservation of its recordings housed in Murphy Library Special Collections\/ARC.
