{"id":1981,"date":"2014-12-10T17:54:38","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T23:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwpowerswi.com\/?p=1981"},"modified":"2015-03-20T14:26:07","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T19:26:07","slug":"uwos-aeroinnovate-earns-national-economic-development-award","status":"publish","type":"campus_story","link":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/story\/uwos-aeroinnovate-earns-national-economic-development-award\/","title":{"rendered":"UWO\u2019s AeroInnovate earns national economic development award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Business Success Center\u2019s unique aviation and aerospace networking and consulting enterprise,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeroinnovate.org\/\">AeroInnovate<\/a>, has, once again, ascended into some rare air.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/bsc\">UW Oshkosh Business Success Center<\/a>\u00a0offshoot won first place for Leadership &amp; Collaboration at the national University Economic Development Association (UEDA) summit in Santa Fe, N.M. on Sept. 30<\/p>\n<p>The UEDA describes itself as \u201cthe cornerstone membership organization representing higher education, private sector and community economic development stakeholders,\u201d helping expand economic opportunity in our communities by leveraging research, community resources, campus planning, talent development and technology commercialization.\u201d Its mission \u201cis to serve its members by enhancing members\u2019 abilities to deliver economic development benefits through engagement with higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In August, AeroInnovate was selected as a finalist in the UEDA\u2019s 2014 Awards of Excellence program in the Leadership &amp; Collaboration category. Nominations were received from institutions across the country during a highly competitive process. This week, during the Summit, the finalists were judged on replicability and scalability, originality, impact and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>UW Oshkosh Business Success Center Director Doug Jarmusz said the award is both an honor and affirmation of the hard work his team and the University have put into AeroInnovate since its start in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis national award provides one more recognition and endorsement of effort and talent we\u2019ve invested in AeroInnovate on behalf of our region and the state of Wisconsin for the past several years,\u201d Jarmusz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission at the Business Success Center, and within AeroInnovate, is to harness the knowledge and innovation we have at UW Oshkosh to help supercharge economic development and vitality locally, regionally and throughout Wisconsin,\u201d he said. \u201cTo receive this award while nominated along with a field of quality, national institutions proving the economic development power of their universities demonstrates that we are on the right path. It is an unbelievable honor, and we are humbled and proud to receive it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meridith Jaeger, who founded and helped establish AeroInnovate\u2013now serving as executive director of the Wisconsin Family Business Forum at UW Oshkosh\u2013presented on the project at the UEDA Annual Summit in Santa Fe, where Summit participants voted on the category winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were some pretty amazing finalist projects alongside AeroInnovate,\u201d Jaeger said. \u201cI am honored and really proud to bring this award home to UW Oshkosh.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZzmcTsspXlA?wmode=transparent]<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>David Brukardt, associate vice president for economic development for the UW System, said the UEDA award is a testament to the effectiveness of AeroInnovate. Brukardt noted the critical support AeroInnovate has provided to aviation-industry suppliers and other companies Wisconsin economic-development agencies are likewise trying to help establish a stronger and broader foothold in the state as they comply with important regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is remarkable about this whole project over the last few years is the amount of collaboration and momentum that it has instilled in an industry that the state can really make a difference in,\u201d Brukardt said. \u201c\u2026 It sets a high standard, and it\u2019s a great example of what the University can do when it collaborates across the region and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since its 2007 launch inside the Business Success Center at UW Oshkosh, AeroInnovate has evolved and expanded its role as a key partner with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and economic development agencies throughout the state, helping promote and grow the state\u2019s aviation industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2080\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2014\/12\/UWO_AeroInnovate2012_Walker-320x240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2014\/12\/UWO_AeroInnovate2012_Walker-320x240.jpg\" alt=\"Gov. Scott Walker visits EAA AirVenture 2013\u2019s AeroInnovate pavilion to learn more about the initiative and the aviation and aerospace endeavors it is helping strengthen in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>Close to home at UW Oshkosh, AeroInnovate has helped local government partners including the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County and the city\u2019s industrial development corporation, CHAMCO Inc., to develop an aviation business accelerator. Ground has broken on the innovative facility, which will be the anchor development within land acquired for an aviation industrial park expansion at Wittman Regional Airport, home to Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and other growing general aviation and aviation-related businesses in the New North region.<\/p>\n<p>AeroInnovate has also had a strong, steady presence at EAA\u2019s annual AirVenture conventions \u2013 a global gathering of aviation enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, pilots, aircraft builders, advocacy groups and government agencies. AeroInnovate\u2019s AirVenture \u201cPitch and Mingle\u201d events have become staple showcases of some of the newest, up-and-coming national and global aviation technologies and companies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, AeroInnovate successfully hosted the first-ever Wisconsin Aerospace Consortium meeting at the EAA.<\/p>\n<p>The Consortium involves aviation and aerospace business executives, industry leaders and entrepreneurs from throughout Wisconsin. It is a new collaborative effort focused on strengthening the state\u2019s position and future in the aviation industry, throughout the nation and around the globe.
