Three Warhawk alumni have combined their communication, marketing and business educations to create Midwest Mattress Recovery in Watertown \u2013 Wisconsin\u2019s first mattress recycling business.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re proud of creating jobs while building a business that helps the environment by diverting bulky mattresses from state landfills.\u00a0 They disassemble mattresses and box springs and salvage the wood, metal, foam and cotton components that can be sold and recycled.<\/p>\n

Owner Bob Mudler, a 1997 graduate of UW-Whitewater, caught the entrepreneurial spirit while working as a salesman for waste and recycling businesses. About four years ago, he formed Total Waste Solutions, a consulting company that he continues to own and operate.<\/p>\n

Clients kept asking him about recycling mattresses.\u00a0 He had no good answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opportunity didn\u2019t exist for people who wanted to recycle mattresses,\u2019\u2019 Mudler said. \u201cI really felt like a lot of businesses, public and private, wanted to recycle their mattresses.\u201d<\/p>\n

He came up with a business plan for Midwest Mattress Recovery, which opened its doors in March and has recycled nearly 13,000 mattresses while serving clients ranging from local governments to hotels to junk collectors.<\/p>\n

Mudler is proud of building a business while also protecting the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are helping preserve our landfill space, which is very important in the state of Wisconsin,\u2019\u2019 he said.\u00a0 \u201cWe are a for-profit company and right now we\u2019re holding our own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mudler shared his idea with another Warhawk, Kyle Kopplin, during early-morning basketball games in Watertown.\u00a0 Kopplin, who graduated in 2008 with a major in speech and a minor in marketing, joined the business.\u00a0 He\u2019s now the plant manager, a job that entails everything from scheduling to training to driving trucks.<\/p>\n

As Mudler worked on a business plan that eventually won a Small Business Administration loan, he sought help from his father, Dennis Mudler, a 1970 graduate of UW-Whitewater\u2019s College of Business and Economics.<\/p>\n

The elder Mudler had retired after a 30-year career as business manager for the Watertown public schools.\u00a0 He had a few questions for his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very supportive, but he asked me a lot of the hard questions that I needed to answer before I opened the door,\u2019\u2019 Bob Mudler said. \u201cHis skill set was much needed to help get us off the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Midwest Mattress Recovery now employs 10 people, three full time and seven part time, Mudler said.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably the coolest thing about this business is that we\u2019re creating jobs,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cWe\u2019re creating jobs, and recycling in general creates jobs.\u00a0 We take a lot of pride in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He plans to handle about 35,000 mattresses in 2014, which would save 805,000 cubic feet of landfill space.<\/p>\n

Mudler is especially grateful to the city of Watertown, which kept its promise to become his first customer when the business opened its doors. Other clients include the city of Madison, Waukesha and Outagamie counties, and several universities and motels throughout the Great Lakes region.<\/p>\n

Sometimes arriving in 53-foot semitrailers, mattresses and box springs of all sizes are torn apart by workers wielding box cutters and wearing gloves, eye protection and dust masks. There\u2019s a certain \u201cyuck factor\u2019\u2019 in handling used mattresses, but workers have never seen a bedbug, Kopplin said.\u00a0 Employees dismantle about four mattresses per hour.<\/p>\n

Mudler majored in speech and communication at UW-Whitewater, gaining public speaking skills that serve him well as he promotes his business and the value of recycling to potential clients and the public.<\/p>\n

His Warhawk education \u201chelped me become a very outgoing person,\u2019\u2019 he said.\u00a0 \u201cI have to do a lot of public speaking.\u00a0 I have to run a business, run a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looks forward to expanding his business.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of neat,\u2019\u2019 Mudler said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s three different generations of UW-Whitewater graduates helping get this business off the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n
