On Sunday, Sept. 21, he found himself on the start line of the Community First Fox Cities Marathon (presented by Miron), his first race longer than 10,000 meters.<\/p>\n<p>Two hours, 39 minutes and 19 seconds later, Thill was the first to cross the finish line, winning his debut marathon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128486\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-128486 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/3044057c-c5c5-478f-a07d-26d24714dd07-595x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128486\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-128486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UWO alumnus, John Thill of Oshkosh, won the Fox Cities Marathon<br \/>\nSept. 20, in his first marathon attempt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe environment was really energizing. It was never something I thought about doing before,\u201d Thill said. \u201cI\u2019m still speechless on the results and what happened, it\u2019s so fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked why he decided to start with a full marathon instead of a shorter race like the half marathon, Thill said, \u201cIf I\u2019m going to a half, why not just do the full right away? Once I finish the half, I know I\u2019m going to want to do more, so why not do the whole thing? I wanted to see what I am capable of doing and just go from there so I can grow as a runner and as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Oshkosh West High School graduate was not the only Titan to compete in the Fox Cities Marathon on Sunday. Assistant cross country and track &amp; field coach\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwoshkoshtitans.com\/staff-directory\/brittany-haas-gibson\/68\">Brittany Gibson<\/a>\u00a0set a personal record in the women\u2019s half marathon (1:29.55) and head baseball coach\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwoshkoshtitans.com\/staff-directory\/kevin-tomasiewicz\/4\">Kevin Tomasiewicz<\/a>\u00a0ran in the men\u2019s half marathon while his wife, Jessica, who is the director of UW-Oshkosh\u2019s doctoral nurse practitioners-nurse anesthesia emphasis program, ran the full marathon. As he ran the 26.2-mile course, Thill saw numerous people from UW-Oshkosh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(UW-Oshkosh Athletics) is very supportive of each other,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re all here to help people grow, cheer on others and watch each other grow. It\u2019s super fun having other people on your side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Encouraged by his debut marathon performance, Thill, who was a member of the cross country team from 2021-24 and the track &amp; field program from 2022-23 and in 2025, has set his sights on the historic Boston Marathon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128485\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-128485 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/e7b5515d-bd18-4183-80c4-33dd4e648166-595x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128485\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-128485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Thill, center, celebrates his Fox Cities Marathon victory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBritt and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwoshkoshtitans.com\/staff-directory\/eamon-mckenna\/61\">Eamon [McKenna]<\/a>\u00a0are helping me figure out how to set Boston up,\u201d he said. \u201cMy goal for that is 2027 since my time was qualifying, so that\u2019s where my next big race is. During that time, I\u2019ll do some half marathons in the area to see what I can do and go from there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Titans are no stranger to the Boston Marathon. Former head cross country and track &amp; field coach and UW-Oshkosh, WIAC, and U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association halls of fame inductee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwoshkoshtitans.com\/honors\/hall-of-fame\/john-zupanc\/250\">John Zupanc<\/a>\u00a0has run in 29 Boston Marathons with three top-50 placements and a best finish of 18th in 1985. He plans to compete in his 30th Boston Marathon in 2026.
