{"id":1255,"date":"2013-07-15T22:04:29","date_gmt":"2013-07-16T03:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwpowerswi.com\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2015-04-10T12:33:11","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T17:33:11","slug":"uw-stouts-flash-frozen-wins-national-e-3-video-game-competition","status":"publish","type":"campus_story","link":"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/all-in-wisconsin\/story\/uw-stouts-flash-frozen-wins-national-e-3-video-game-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"UW-Stout&#8217;s Flash Frozen wins national E-3 video game competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Menomonie, Wis. \u2014 University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin\u2019s Polytechnic University, can hang a new banner from its rafters: National video game champion.<\/p>\n<p>Flash Frozen, a video game created by a team of UW-Stout game design and development students, was declared national co-champion Thursday, June 13, at the Entertainment Software Association E-3 conference in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>UW-Stout\u2019s game tied for first in the inaugural E-3 College Game Competition. The other co-champion was Lost in Thought, a game from Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design. The games were judged by leading professionals in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an outstanding accomplishment from this talented and innovative group of students and their advisers,\u201d said Chancellor Charles W. UW-Stout, Savannah and three other schools were named finalists out of 60 entries and presented at the conference, considered the premier world event in the video and computer game industry.<\/p>\n<p>More than 48,000 people from 102 countries attended the conference, which began Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an example of a program that has achieved excellence with fantastic leadership under Diane Christie and Dave Beck and all the faculty involved,\u201d said Jacalyn Weissenburger, associate vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2382\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2013\/07\/UW-Stout_flashfrozen_christie-diane1_CS_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2013\/07\/UW-Stout_flashfrozen_christie-diane1_CS_2.jpg\" alt=\"Diane Christie\" width=\"150\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diane Christie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Diane Christie is the program director. Dave Beck is the program\u2019s art coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a remarkable milestone for Flash Frozen to win the national title and be created by students from a program that is only four years old,\u201d Christie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe game&#8217;s stunning visuals and immersive environment stood out from the crowd, largely due to the unmatched curriculum that the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Art and Design provided the eight artists on the team,\u201d Beck said. &#8220;This award demonstrates the quality of students and faculty that UW-Stout is known for, combining applied learning with technology, through innovative approaches that cross multiple disciplines between the arts and sciences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2383\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2013\/07\/UW-Stout_flashfrozen_beck-dave_150pxWidth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/forwisconsin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/378\/2013\/07\/UW-Stout_flashfrozen_beck-dave_150pxWidth.jpg\" alt=\"Dave Beck\" width=\"150\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Beck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flash Frozen is a survival horror game. Players are trapped on an iceberg in a haunted, shipwrecked vessel. Players must escape the ship while surviving the harsh, frozen environment and its many dangers. For more information about the game, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flashfrozengame.com\">www.flashfrozengame.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 12 students developed Flash Frozen in the senior 3D Game Design class taught by Christie and Beck.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the 12 students who created Flash Frozen are artists and four are programmers.
