University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone and the university’s mascot, Pounce the Panther, recently visited BelAir Cantina on Downer Avenue in Milwaukee, highlighting the strong ties between the university and local businesses, particularly those owned by UWM alumni. The visit was part of the Universities of Wisconsin\u2019s \u201cMascots on Main\u201d initiative that aims to demonstrate the strong connections between the UWs and businesses across the state.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Mone and Pounce arrived at the popular taco eatery during the lunch hour, interacting with patrons and staff. The choice of BelAir Cantina was significant because the establishment is owned by Kristyn O\u2019Laughlin, a proud alumna of UW-Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

During the visit, Chancellor Mone spoke with Kristin about her journey as an entrepreneur and the ongoing relationship between her business and the university.<\/p>\n

\u201cKristyn is a standout alumna, who is using her entrepreneurial expertise to strengthen our community,\u201d Chancellor Mone said. \u201cOur alumni play an important role, not only as employers but also as mentors for our students. I\u2019m proud of the example Kristyn has set through her role as a business leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

The relationship between UWM and BelAir Cantina extends beyond alumni ownership. BelAir is a popular off-campus spot for UWM students, and many Panthers have worked or currently work at its various locations, providing valuable employment opportunities and fostering a direct economic link between the university and the business.<\/p>\n

The visit by Chancellor Mone and Pounce serves as a tangible example of UWM’s commitment to community engagement and its dedication to supporting and celebrating the achievements of its alumni.<\/p>\n
