The University of Wisconsin-Superior and\u00a0Yellowjacket Athletics<\/a>\u00a0have announced the addition of three sports \u2013 one varsity sport and two club sports, to its current athletic offerings.<\/p>\n

UW-Superior will add one varsity NCAA sport, women\u2019s lacrosse, which will debut in time for the 2026-27 academic year with sights set on competing in the spring 2027 season. Additionally, UW-Superior will add two club sports \u2013 men\u2019s ice hockey and men\u2019s soccer, which will begin play in the 2025-26 academic year.<\/p>\n

The additions bring the total varsity sports at UW-Superior to 20 (9 men\u2019s, 11 women\u2019s). The club men\u2019s hockey and soccer teams will be the first club sports brought under the umbrella of Yellowjacket Athletics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to expand our offerings to provide more, and new, opportunities for student-athletes. Expanding these programs appeals to the interest we receive from prospective students and the growing participation of these sports within our region,\u201d UW-Superior director of athletics\u00a0Nick Bursik<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s club hockey is anticipated to compete in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) and have a competitive schedule against regional peer institutions. Men\u2019s club soccer will compete against other regional club programs during a fall competitive season. In both programs, student-athletes will be supported by head coaches and integrated into the support systems of the athletics department. Searches for the programs\u2019 first head coaches will commence immediately.<\/p>\n

As one of the fastest growing collegiate sports at the NCAA Division III level, women\u2019s lacrosse is slated to have its inaugural season in the 2026-27 academic year. The program will compete against regional peers as conference affiliation is explored. A national search to hire the head coach of the women\u2019s lacrosse program is expected to begin this spring.<\/p>\n
