His role gave him firsthand experience in shaping policy that could have lasting effects on rural healthcare nationwide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block-field block-field-paragraphs\">\n<div class=\"field field-paragraphs entity-reference-revisions\">\n<div class=\"widget layout-section\">\n<div id=\"paragraph-48864\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--layout-section\">\n<div class=\"widget-section\">\n<div class=\"layout layout--onecol\">\n<div class=\"layout__region layout__region--content\" data-once=\"removeEmpty\">\n<div id=\"paragraph-48866\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<h3>Addressing rural healthcare challenges: A policy brief with purpose<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48867\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>During his internship, Burgdorf\u2019s primary focus was developing a policy brief titled \u201cRecommendations to Advance Rural Health through Title VIII,\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>which explored the financial instability plaguing rural hospitals. More than 700 of these essential community facilities in the U.S. are at risk of closing, including more than 360 that could face financial collapse imminently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48869\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>Burgdorf proposed increasing Title VIII funding, expanding telehealth services and advancing workforce development through loan forgiveness programs to attract healthcare providers to underserved areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRural hospitals are more than just healthcare facilities \u2014 they are lifelines for their communities,\u201d Burgdorf says. \u201cThe ripple effects of hospital closures are devastating, leading to increased mortality rates and severe economic strain on already vulnerable areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His research revealed a shocking statistic:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every rural hospital that closes, the local mortality rate rises by 6.7%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burgdorf\u2019s recommendations offered targeted solutions, particularly the expansion of telehealth services, which could provide patients in remote areas access to specialized care without the need for long-distance travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48870\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<h3>Landing the internship: Passion and persistence<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48871\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>Burgdorf\u2019s journey to securing the AACN internship was a mix of perseverance and passion. \u201cI found the internship through AACN\u2019s website and knew immediately that it was a perfect fit,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing from his personal connection to rural healthcare \u2014 especially the closure of Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire \u2014 Burgdorf stood out as an applicant. His dual passion for healthcare and policy, along with his academic background in nursing and public health, allowed him to emphasize the importance of healthcare advocacy in rural areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48872\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<h3>A transformational experience in Washington, D.C.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48873\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>Living and working in Washington, D.C., allowed Burgdorf to engage directly with policymakers. Attending legislative briefings and advocating for rural health equity on Capitol Hill provided invaluable insight into the complexities of healthcare policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw firsthand how advocacy can truly move the needle on critical healthcare issues,\u201d Burgdorf says. \u201cThe experience reinforced my belief that nurses must be part of the policy discussions shaping our healthcare systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside of work, Burgdorf made sure to take in the rich history and culture of the nation\u2019s capital, visiting the National Mall, the National Museum of American History and attending a performance at the Kennedy Center. The balance between professional growth and personal exploration made his time in Washington, D.C., unforgettable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48876\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<h3>Connecting clinical care with policy advocacy<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48877\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>Burgdorf\u2019s work at the AACN, where he learned to integrate clinical knowledge with policymaking, complemented his nursing education at UW-Eau Claire. His experience drafting the Title VIII policy brief sharpened his skills in research, writing and public speaking \u2014 skills that he knows will be invaluable as he pursues a future in both nursing and health policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNurses are natural advocates, whether at the bedside or in Congress,\u201d Burgdorf says. \u201cWe have the power to influence health outcomes on a larger scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48878\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<h3>Looking forward: Advice for future nursing students<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-48879\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text\">\n<div class=\"widget-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field-long-text text-long\">\n<p>Having completed his internship, Burgdorf now is more determined than ever to advocate for rural healthcare reform. He encourages his fellow nursing students to take bold steps outside traditional clinical roles and explore health policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need more nurses advocating for the changes we know will improve patient outcomes,\u201d Burgdorf says. \u201cWe know firsthand what patients need, and we can shape the system to provide better care for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burgdorf\u2019s experience in Washington, D.C., is a testament to the impact that nursing professionals can have on healthcare policy.
