As a single mother of two boys, she put aside her own dreams for college, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Junior and first-generation college student said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur whole life, our mom was telling us that she was going to put us through college,\u201d Funk said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With the support of a federal academic program generating future scholars, coupled with financial support channeled through UWO and the university\u2019s new focus on first-generation students\u2019 success, Funk has realized his mom\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The junior student from Racine, majoring in physical education, is one of 420 UWO students who receive support from the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services program (First-gen students meeting certain criteria are eligible to apply for TRIO services.) And Funk is now a peer mentor for the program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSchool never really was for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI never thought I would make it this far, honestly. I\u2019m proud of myself and the investment that I made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Funk\u2019s success story is the latest resulting from UWO\u2019s efforts to bolster support for first-generation students. A new initiative\u2014the First Scholars program\u2013links more than 3,000 self-identified first-generation students to various support services, volunteer faculty mentors and staff to help navigate college for retention and graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Funk said TRIO helped him not only manage his academics but also better command a budget and afford college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cComing to college you see that big price tag and when I saw that I thought, \u2018Man, how am I going to pay for all of this?\u2019\u201d Funk said. \u201c(TRIO advisors) stepped in; That equates to 3,200 to 3,500 students each year at the institution.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2022, the retention rate of UWO first-gen students was approximately 8% behind non-first gen students, and second-to-third- year retention was behind by over 16%.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jason Herman, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cademic adviser for TRIO Student Support Services, said the First Scholars program is designed to provide first-gen students with the resources they need to flourish academically.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0And he noted f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">irst-gen students face challenges different from non-first gen students.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_124918\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124918 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/Jessica-Spanbauer-Sml.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124918\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-124918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Spanbauer<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou basically have to reprogram what it means to be a student once you come to college,\u201d Herman said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have parents helping you out with that, how do you learn that? That\u2019s how the First Scholars program will help students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jessica Spanbauer, Director of the Center for Academic Resources and volunteer team lead for First Scholars, said that as a first-generation college student herself, she understands the challenges that first-gen students face.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBecause I have done a lot of reflection on my own experience as an undergraduate student \u2026 you realize that you don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know,\u201d Spanbauer said. \u201cThat was me as an undergrad \u2026 I didn\u2019t seek out help when I should have.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spanbauer said the goal of First Scholars is to teach students that there are services available to help them navigate college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s about being able to get them to feel confident in themselves as a student so that they can be successful,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cDo college together\u201d<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_124961\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwosh.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/53956395176_4ce809be38_k-192x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"240\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124961\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-124961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blaser<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Madelyn Blaser, a junior majoring in human services leadership, said her challenges as a first-gen student were numerous, including \u2018figuring out how to do college, what it looks like to pay for college, understanding financial aid and where to find support from people who have experienced college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now in her third year, Blaser, of Janesville, encourages first-generation students new to UW Oshkosh to take advantage of programs like TRIO and First Scholars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYes, college can be stressful and seem scary at moments, but you are not alone,\u201d she said. \u201cConnect with others who are first-generation students and staff. Do college together with each other.
