(UWM Photo\/Howie Magner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UW-Milwaukee\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning is a key partner in a new $3.4 million grant awarded to the city of Milwaukee by the U.S. Department of Energy. Milwaukee is using the grant to develop 25 all-electric, <a href=\"https:\/\/city.milwaukee.gov\/eco\/Buildings-Energy\/Net-Zero-Energy-Housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Net-Zero Energy Homes<\/a>\u00a0on vacant lots in three disadvantaged communities.<\/p>\n<p>UWM professors Mo Zell and Alex Timmer are leading UWM\u2019s part of the project: developing and testing which wall systems will work best for the homes, given the region\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n<p>Zell spoke Friday at a September 6 news conference featuring Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and other project partners at Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. She thanked the city of Milwaukee for its longstanding partnership with UWM and spoke about her team\u2019s role of designing, constructing and fabricating a series of wall systems as research and educational tools.
